Future of Adelaide Aquatic Centre Assured

A full programme of works to repair water leaks in the main and dive pools at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre is underway.

The leaks were recently discovered as part of a detailed conditions inspection during the roof replacement.

Council gave approval for an additional $400,000 funding to address the issue as part of a series of upgrades that will protect the important community asset well into the future.

Council informed the Environment Protection Agency as a matter of precaution, although there is not thought to be any health hazard from the chlorinated water.

Andrew MacDonald, Council’s Active City Program Manager said, “The roof repairs presented an excellent opportunity for Council to better understand the condition of the Centre’s pools and plant rooms through a series of audits and to progress with related maintenance. All of these activities could only be conducted while the pools were closed."

“We noticed that the water level in both pools dropped significantly of their own accord over a three week period. The balance of water in both pools was then removed through manual pumping to allow the program conditions audit to take place,” he said.

FMG Engineering, when called to investigate the pools, found that the concrete joints on the floor and sides of the pools had deteriorated due to normal wear and tear and the age of the pools.

“The work on the balance tank and on the construction joints in both pools is directly contributing to the future upgrade of the Centre,” Andrew said.

Adelaide City Council is currently in discussions with SA Water in relation to future water saving initiatives at the Centre.

These will be incorporated as part of the Centre’s future upgrade. The pools, spas, saunas and steam rooms are closed during the roof restoration and pool works and are due to reopen mid to late September. Other services remain open.

The Health Club has been relocated to the front foyer and is fully operational as is the Splash Café and Reception. Crèche facilities have been relocated to the former Swim Shop with extended hours. A limited amount of Swim Shop merchandise is available from the Customer Service Centre at Reception.

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said, “The Aquatic Centre Feasibility Study is in progress and will inform future upgrades of the centre. It will include detailed stages of development to ultimately achieve a modern aquatic and recreational destination.

"It will cater for people who want to maintain their health and wellbeing, as well as allowing families to experience an exciting day out with the kids in a fun, action packed and stimulating environment.”

The recommendations from the study will be brought to Council in August.
