Australian Indie rock band The Whitlams, took to the stage at The Gov this December as part of their ‘The Whitlams Love This City’ Tour. Joined by special guest Charm of Finches, the Whitlams celebrated 25 years since the Love This City album was released, playing the album in its entirety plus their greatest hits.
The album was the ambitious follow-up to the award-winning Eternal Nightcap, and its reputation has only grown over the years, recently being named in Rolling Stone’s Best Australian Albums of All Time list last year at no. 101. Singles “Blow Up the Pokies” and “Thank You (for loving me at my worst)” all came from the album, which explored issues and attitudes around poker machines, the Sydney Olympics and East Timor, as well as the Whitlams’ usual world-wise romanticism. The album went on to become double-platinum.
