Cancer treatment returns to Henley Beach with new infusion suite at Western Hospital

GenesisCare has launched a medical oncology infusion suite at Western Hospital in Henley Beach, significantly improving local cancer care with treatments like chemotherapy and immunotherapy now available closer to home.

GenesisCare has officially opened a new medical oncology infusion suite at Western Hospital in Henley Beach, marking a major return of local cancer treatment services that the community has been fighting to restore. As South Australia’s largest private cancer care provider, GenesisCare is now offering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood transfusions, bisphosphonates and iron infusions onsite, delivered by the Adelaide Oncology and Haematology team.

The re-establishment of medical oncology at Western Hospital comes after strong community advocacy, including a petition signed by more than 1,200 locals calling for services to return. For long-time staff member and current patient Jenny Read, the reopening is deeply personal. “It means a lot to see medical oncology treatments resume here at the hospital,” she said. “I live five-minutes away and have strong personal connections to the hospital, which is also my workplace. I had my babies at the hospital, I’ve been a part of the fundraising committee; I’m so pleased to receive my care at the hospital again, in my community.”

The new suite has the capacity to deliver up to 2,500 treatments per year, reducing travel time for patients and placing essential cancer care back within reach for Henley Beach and surrounding suburbs. GenesisCare Medical Oncologist and Chair of the Medical Oncology and Haematology Clinical Management Committee, Dr Vy Broadbridge, said bringing these services back to the hospital was an important step in improving accessibility. “GenesisCare is proud to bring this medical oncology infusion suite to Henley Beach,” Dr Broadbridge said. “Access to essential cancer care in one’s neighbourhood can reduce the need to commute between appointments and means patients can access treatment close to their support networks. We warmly acknowledge the patients and team members who are now returning to the hospital for medical oncology treatment as we strive to deliver highly personalised care and the best possible patient outcomes,” said Dr Broadbridge.

The infusion suite joins Western Hospital’s growing footprint of upgraded facilities, including a newly opened 16-bed inpatient ward and a day surgery clinic as part of a broader expansion. The partnership strengthens the hospital’s goal of delivering personalised, community-centred health services, with many patients and staff now returning to a familiar and trusted setting for treatment.

GenesisCare, which treats around 35,000 Australians each year across 50 locations, continues to focus on modern treatment techniques, research-driven innovation and personalised medicine. The expansion at Western Hospital reflects that commitment, offering local patients access to advanced cancer care backed by global clinical expertise — all without leaving their neighbourhood.
