George Gross and Harry Watt to launch their Autumn range at the Strathalbyn Cup

They’ve been creating fashion for Australian women for more than 37 years and their race wear is in demand around the country – but even for South Australia’s most famed fashion exports, George Gross and Harry Watt, there’s nothing like a race meeting in their home town.

The pair, who have frequented some of the world’s biggest and best racing events including the Melbourne Cup, the Kentucky Derby and Royal Ascot, will be making their mark on South Australia’s most glamorous provincial race meeting this Sunday – launching their new range of Autumn race wear exclusively at the Strathalbyn Cup (January 16).

Their Autumn/Winter ranges are filled with perfect race day outfits in a neutral palette of ivory, black, grey and stone, highlighted with red and hot pink and they’re set to make heads turn at race meetings around the country in 2011, starting with Strathalbyn.

“We’re excited to be showcasing our new range at Strathalbyn – how can we not love a race meeting in our hometown, particularly when it is the most glamorous of its kind in the state,” George said.

“This season’s looks are fun and feminine and they’re perfect for a day at the track – whether it be a country, provincial or metropolitan event – at home in South Australia or abroad.

“Our design philosophy is about ensuring that real women of any age can look feminine, sexy and elegant – it’s all about applying the right fabric, the right cut and embracing colour.”

To set their pieces apart George and Harry have always focused on smart suiting, luxurious fabrics and elegant detailing, but they say their five top tips will have you looking perfect come Cup Day.

  1. No evening or cocktail wear! Chiffon at the races does not work, trust us. Choose a well-cut dress or smart suit but no floaty evening wear please!
  2. Wear a hat. What other chance do women have to wear hats and dress-up? Go and find yourself a great style that suits you and your taste and please stay away from fascinators!
  3. Make sure you have comfortable shoes. This does not mean they have to be low-heeled or not fashionable, just something you can spend the day in and still look great at the end of it. If they are new heels, wear them every day the week before so on race day you will be perfectly comfortable.
  4. Behave yourself. Have fun, enjoy the party but remember that at the end of a day, drinking too much can be very tacky. Avoid that and learn to fall-over gracefully if you must.
  5. Come and visit our stores and stockists. Our staff know all there is to know and can point you in the right direction for every aspect of your outfit. Not only will you look fabulous come race day but it will be easy and stress free – the perfect way to start your day.

Held at the Strathalbyn Racecourse, just 40 minutes from Adelaide, the Strathalbyn Cup is expected to attract close to 4000 guests.
