Georges on Waymouth will celebrate the launch of First Drop Wines’ 2018 ‘Fat of the Land’ range and 2018 ‘The Cream’ ICON Shiraz with a new release dinner this Wednesday, August 16.

These wines were recently voted by internationally acclaimed wine critic James Suckling in the top 100 best wines in the world and the dinner will be hosted by the winemaker himself, John Retsas.

First Drop is based in the Barossa and say they create wines with “flavour, texture and a splash of funk” using fruit sourced from unique vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Barossa, resulting in wines that capture the essence of these diverse landscapes.

Georges on Waymouth owner George Kasimatis says wine enthusiasts and food lovers are in for a treat, with a five-course dinner paired with various First Drop wines.

“John’s wines definitely speak of place, they speak to the Barossa, they are a range of wines that definitely showcase not only the Barossa, but South Australia. They are amazing wines,” George says.

On the menu, guests will feast their eyes on a range of beautiful local produce, with kingfish, scallops, duck and beef brisket the stars of the show, each paired with a First Drop wine.

To begin, the first course will include Hiramasa Port Lincoln Kingfish with Riverland blood orange, verjuice vinaigrette and chervil accompanied by a 2022 ‘Following the Sun’ Prosecco.

This will be followed by a second course of Abrolhos Island Scallops, Jerusalem artichoke puree and skins, paired with a 2022 ‘Real Time’ Chardonnay.

The culinary journey continues with house-made maltagliati pasta, confit duck leg, sofrito and masala for the third course, accompanied by 2018 ‘Fat of the Land’ wines from Seppeltsfield, Greenock and Balthazar.

The fourth course will include a slow-cooked beef brisket, pomme puree, liquorice jus and balsamic shallots paired with a 2018 ‘The Cream’ ICON Shiraz.

But it won’t stop at wine, with a fifth course of a chocolate and orange tart with clotted cream served with John’s Spirito Santo ‘Siropo’ Amaro from his eclectic range of spirits to complete the evening.

George says this event was the next in the restaurant’s series of winemaker dinners and believes it is important to showcase local wines because it is a way to support South Australian producers.

“It is definitely something we specialise in, putting on the wine events with local producers, showcasing what our regions have to offer in South Australia, and in this case it is all about the Barossa for this dinner, paired with local fresh produce by our head chef Cameron Coutts,” he says.

“It is also an opportunity for guests to visit the restaurant if they haven’t for some time.”

Tickets are $175 per person all-inclusive and are around halfway to being sold out with very limited seating, so get in quick.

“The dinners we do with John are very popular at Georges and they have a big following. Dinners with John at George’s do tend to sell quickly,” George says.
