German-inspired cafe, Imbiss, opens in the heart of Glenelg

The latest addition to the Jetty Road cafe scene is new cafe hot spot, Imbiss Cafe—inspired by the vibrant flavours and traditional snacks and street food of Germany.

Launching this Saturday in the central business hub of Glenelg is the new cafe hot spot, Imbiss Cafe—inspired by the vibrant flavours and traditional snacks and street food of Germany.

The latest addition to the bustling Jetty Road cafe scene is family-owned and run by Tina and her partner Nicholas, who are excited to share their German-inspired cuisine with locals and visitors alike. ‘Everyone here in SA is very familiar with the Bavarian style of German food,’ says Tina, ‘but we’re more inspired by the northern regions and foods from Berlin, which is what we want to introduce to the community.’

‘Imbiss’, which translates to snack in German, perfectly captures the essence of this intimate cafe, with lots of options to enjoy on the go or during your busy work day. ‘We have an array of morning treats like pastries, danishes, and apple turnovers—each with a German-inspired flair to enjoy with your coffee,’ says Tina. ‘Our breakfast menu also features fresh pretzels, fruit salads, granola, and various takeaway options for those who have no time to stop but still want something healthy to start their day.’

At 11 am, Imbiss Cafe’s kitchen comes alive with an exciting lineup of traditional German snacks, street foods and gourmet sandwiches. Sample the famous ‘Currywurst’—a bratwurst fried on the grill, topped with homemade curry ketchup and served alongside golden fries—the delicious ‘Kranskis’, or customise your own bratwurst with a choice of housemade condiments.

‘We also have dishes like “Frikadelle”, which are pork and beef mince patties infused with a blend of aromatic herbs and spices, our German-style “Schnitzel”, which is lightly crumbed and fried to perfection, and the “Flammkuchen”—a traditional German-style pizza that features a thin dough base and topped with creamy creme fraiche sauce, German smoked bacon, onions and cheese,’ says Tina.

Tina, who is the heart and soul behind Imbiss Cafe, grew up in Germany and came to Australia at the age of 19. Her love for her homeland’s cuisine, coupled with her Australian adventures, inspired her to share the taste of Germany with her newfound community.

‘During my travels around Australia and throughout the Barossa and Hahndorf regions, I noticed that there were certain foods and flavours from home that I couldn’t seem to find here,’ says Tina. ‘I began making these dishes for myself at home and thought it would be a great opportunity to share these flavours and introduce these foods I love so much with the South Australian people.’

And so Imbiss Cafe was born.

Each dish is also infused with generations of love and passion for food and flavours, with Tina giving customers a glimpse into her family heritage. ‘These are all traditional family recipes passed down from my mum, grandma, and great-grandma that I was taught and enjoyed growing up.’

Tina also prides herself on using only the finest and freshest ingredients, working with local suppliers like Barossa Fine Foods, reputable butchers, and top-notch fruit and vegetable stores. ‘Every dish is prepared fresh, with everything, including all the sauces and condiments being handmade,’ says Tina.

Imbiss Cafe currently opens its doors from Monday to Sunday, 8 am to 4 pm, serving delicious breakfast and lunch options in their warm and inviting space that seats 10-12 people in either the small bar area or table seating. ‘If you’re craving the taste of Germany or simply eager to try something new, come and visit us at Imbiss Cafe,’ says Tina. Saturday marks the official launch, so be sure to head down, grab a coffee, and treat yourself to the unique flavours of German street food. Guten Appetit!
