Winter is coming, and with the cold weather comes Christmas markets. Yes, July is a bit early to be thinking about Christmas, but the deliberate irony of Christmas in July gives us Northern Hemisphere folk a chance to wear woolly Christmas jumpers, drink hot cocoa or Gluhwein (mulled wine), and immerse ourselves in the full Wintery Christmas experience.
This July, another Christmas tradition is making its way to Adelaide – a Weihnachtsmarkt! German Christmas markets, also known as ‘Christkindlmarkts’, have a long history in Adelaide. Most know of Hahndorf’s Christkindlmarkt, which occurs later in the year, but now the Adelaide German Club is hosting one too!
The South Australian German Club has promoted and cultivated SA’s rich German culture and history for over 125 years, and now hopes to gather lovers of all things German at their very own Weihnachtsmarkt.
The event will occur on Saturday 16 July from 2:00pm – 9:00pm. Pull up a chair and enjoy some of Europe’s popular Xmas market foods and beer, as well as meet market stallholders selling various home made products.
This will be the Adelaide German Club’s second Weihnachtsmarkt at their new location, the first of which was a roaring success.
This year, the club hopes to raise funds for the club, so they can continue to hold further events and represent the German community in Adelaide.
Based in Brooklyn Park, the German Club will be bringing a little bit of Germany to the Western suburbs. So if you love all things German and Christmas, earmark this fun community event in your calendar this July.
