Get out of the Movie Mainstream

If you want to catch some of the best classic, cult, experimental and thought-provoking films ever to hit the big screen in Adelaide, there’s still plenty of time to join South Australia’s premier film society – Adelaide Cinémathèque.

Season 2 of 2010 Adelaide Cinémathèque launches next week with a special 50th anniversary screening of the most iconic film of the French Nouvelle Vague, Jean-Luc Godard’s À bout de souffle (Breathless), on Monday 2 August. Complimentary beer courtesy of Barossa Valley Brewing will be supplied on the night, so it’s a French soirée not to be missed!

Adelaide Cinémathèque screenings are only available to society members and films are screened every Monday and Thursday night (at 7.30pm) at the Mercury Cinema (13 Morphett Street) – with special Brews & Reviews gatherings at the end of selected sessions.

The Season 2 program features some amazing highlights, including a journey through the British sixties pop movement with A Hard Day’s Night (5 August), That’ll Be the Day (9 August), Summer Holiday (12 August) and Head (16 August), followed by a series commemorating the work of legendary actor Dennis Hopper, who sadly passed away this year, featuring Easy Rider (19 August), Mad Dog Morgan (23 August), Blue Velvet (26 August) and Colors (30 August).

Sally Potter’s illustrious career will be celebrated with a number of her works, such as the internationally acclaimed and stunning film Orlando (6 September), about an individual who lives for 400 years, changing gender during that time. Cinémathèque will then take a trip through Asia as part of the Oz Asia on Screen program, including the film Autumn Moon (16 September), which will be followed by a Q & A with the film’s director Clara Law, and Secret Sunshine (27 September). October will see the bleak urban romances of French films of the eighties explored with films such as Diva (4 October) and La Femme Nikita (14 October).

The season will boogie on and enjoy a few jazzy nights out with Bird (21 October) and ‘Round Midnight (28 October), before things take a ghastly turn with some Hammer Horror, when Cinémathèque will screen The Curse of Frankenstein (1 November) and Horror of Dracula (4 November).  Later in November, Cinémathèque will celebrate the visual artists Pollock, Basquiat, Caravaggio and Francis Bacon. The ever popular Silent ReMasters program will return when a local SA musician provides a live score to black comedy The Last Laugh on 29 November. Cinémathèque patrons will also get to chill out in Jamaica before the season finishes up with a Cinémathèque Christmas party, topped off by a yuletide screening of Miracle on 34th Street (16 December).

Special Adelaide Cinémathèque Membership options are available for Season 2: Four Session Pass: $35 Full/ $25 Conc; 16 Session Pass: $70 Full/$50 Conc or Special Annual Membership (entry to every session in Season 2): $99 Full / $80 Conc.
