Magical, ethereal, special, a world first (we think). The stunning gourmet produce and breathtaking locations of Kangaroo Island continue to inspire gastronomic creativity and wilderness wonder and so comes the opening of an enchanting fig tree restaurant.
Nestled behind the sand hills of the picturesque Snellings Beach on the north coast of Kangaroo Island, this series of special lunches will see guests venture inside the boughs of an ancient fig tree that was planted by the early settlers around 150 years ago. Over the years the gnarled boughs of the tree have bent over to form natural rooms and a canopy of lush green leaves that will cast dappled light across individual dining tables set out within the trees huge 20 meter diameter. Dreamy.
The geniuses behind this whimsical feast are the owners of Hannaford and Sachs Catering, Rachel Hannaford and Sasha Sachs. If you could hear us we are giving you a huge round of applause. Bravo!
Like stepping into a fairy tale, the duo wanted to create a dining experience that captured all the elements of what makes the island special – the wilderness, great food, wine and a touch of magical enchantment.
Chef Rachel Hannaford has cooked for the likes of Mick Jagger and the Dalai Lama and now she handles Kangaroo Island’s precious culinary cargo with great flair and creativity for locals and visitors who plan to visit Kangaroo Island.
“We wanted to create a dining experience that captured wilderness, great food, wine and a touch of magical wonder,” says Chef, Rachel Hannaford.
If a magical, delicious and once in a lifetime dining experience wasn’t enough, the pair will also be offering a delightful alternate evening option. The team will be opening up their families’ historic shearing shed built from sugar gum trees and old corrugated iron. The eclectic family venue will be adorned with chandeliers, velvet curtains, antique furniture and lit with flickering candle light to set the mood. Guests can choose from an a la carte menu, play croquet under the stars and visit the local wildlife who may come down for a visit.
