Are you craving a holiday destination that combines luxury, seclusion, nature, and sustainability? Willunga Ridge is the perfect place for you, an off-grid getaway nestled just a stone’s throw from the world-famous McLaren Vale wine region.

Located just 45 minutes south of the CBD, this picturesque hillside hideaway offers an intimate, sustainable experience with stunning views of the rural landscape of Willunga South. Tucked away on 10 hectares of undisturbed land, Willunga Ridge features two eco-friendly pods designed to blend into the surrounding environment.

Owners Nils and Sally Gruttner were inspired by the Airbnbs they saw during their travels in Europe to create a getaway destination that combined luxury, authenticity, and homeliness. The choice of a rusty, earthy colour was designed to reflect the natural environment in McLaren Vale. However, inspired by the fine finishes and warmth of European designs, the couple sought to bring that same aesthetic to their Australian venture, creating a comfortable yet sophisticated feel.

These roomy pods run entirely off-grid, from solar-powered electricity to self-generating water systems. Wastewater is treated to environmental standards, and composted food scraps help grow local produce, bringing a touch of the land into your stay.

“Before, it was an old farm with no water, sewage, or electricity,” says Nils. “So it was an ideal canvas to start fresh with. Instead of connecting to the grid, we established solar, rainwater harvesting, and recycled sewage all on site.”

Their goal was simple: to create a self-sustaining retreat where they could grow their own food and eventually retire, all while contributing to the environment.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a complimentary bottle of wine and encouraged to settle in while enjoying the breathtaking sunset. The property is close to a bunch of local wineries, such as Chalk Hill Wines, making it easy for visitors to explore the region’s renowned vineyards before heading back to the Ridge to relax.

“Lots of people visit wineries on the way up to the property,” added Sally. “Once they get to Willunga Ridge, they can relax, enjoy the outlook, and the atmosphere with a glass of wine.”

“It can be your home away from home, where guests can enjoy a nice breakfast in the morning before heading to the wineries, hiking along the Heysen Trail, or swimming at Aldinga Beach or Sellicks.”

Nils and Sally also plan to grow their own produce at Willunga Ridge, a project slated for the next three to four years. Presently, they’re taking time to prepare the land and set up the necessary infrastructure to grow enough food for themselves, their neighbors, and their guests. While this project is a long-term goal, it will further enhance the guest experience by providing fresh, sustainable produce.

Beyond sustainability, these roomy living spaces offer comfort and privacy, with large windows showcasing incredible panoramic views of the rolling countryside. Whether you’re celebrating a specific milestone or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, this serene ridge has all the magic to make your stay a memorable one.

The couple has also received approval to add another pod and a main house, with plans to rent out the space for larger events like weddings and functions. The main house will be their personal residence if they choose to live on the property, while the pods will remain a key part of the guest experience.

With a focus on enhancing both sustainability and the overall guest experience, Willunga Ridge is poised to be a must-visit destination for those seeking a relaxing and eco-friendly escape.
