Getaway: this 1840s schoolhouse offers a big dose luxury in the Adelaide Hills

A luxe refurbished school house in the Adelaide Hills could be your next weekend getaway.

Set on an acre of lush botanical gardens between the Adelaide Hills and The Barossa, and within driving distance of some 100 world class wineries, Old Forreston Schoolhouse is perfectly pitched for a weekend (or mid-week) wine escape.

This cosy heritage building comprises three ornate bedrooms, plus generous living areas. All of them ooze with charming features like original fireplaces, exposed brick and sultry colours.

Arrive and pop the complimentary champers, then sip away as you watch the sun set over the property’s peaceful surrounds, currently abundant with spring blooms, but beautiful year-round.

After cooking a lavish dinner in the functional yet stylish kitchen – it features a fancy new ILVE stove and ASKO dishwasher – retire to one of three sumptuous bedrooms.

The grand master bedroom, with its large sash windows looking into the botanical gardens, a heritage king-size bed, luxurious pillow-top mattress and Egyptian sheets, is a lesson in luxury. Lounge on the chesterfield while you sip a local wine, or simply enjoy the view over the gardens.

From the master bedroom, you can look directly into the fruit orchard and sometimes watch the cows graze in the paddock, as if you were a wealthy heiress from a Charlotte Bronte novel. The room is appointed with antique furniture and leads onto its own sitting area. A sitting area!

The junior bedroom, formally the Principals office, is smaller, but has pleasant views over the front garden. A small sitting room with desk, lamp and chesterfield lounge is adjacent to the junior bedroom and offers an extra private space for those sharing the accomodation with other guests.

The bathroom is appointed with floor to ceiling Italian white marble, plus a modern glass basin and shower – because every heiress deserves a marble bathroom.

It’s the extra special details like this that will make your stay here feel so much better than average. Hosts Amanda and Corey are militant in their attention to detail; turning on electric blankets, stocking the fridge with country breakfast supplies, folding towels in just the right way.

Old Forreston Schoolhouse sleeps up to six guests, and is available to book here from $298 per night.
