Gibson Wines wins best shiraz at London Wine Competition

The Barossa-based winery won the Gold Medal and Best Varietal in Show for the Shiraz/Syrah category, ahead of French, Greek, Spanish, South African, and Portuguese entrants.

The Barossa’s Gibson Wines is celebrating being awarded the Best Shiraz in Show, after the results of the 2022 London Wine Competition were released overnight.

The small winery in the Northern Barossa, founded by Rob and Anne Gibson, took out the Gold Medal and Best Varietal in Show for the Shiraz/Syrah category, for the 2019 Gibson ‘Reserve’ Shiraz.

The wine, which sells in Australia for $55 a bottle, was judged as the top Shiraz from entrants from Australia, France, Greece, Spain, South Africa and Portugal. It was awarded Gold Medal and 95 Points (on a 100-point scale) and assessed as the Best Shiraz in Show, based on a combination of quality, value and packaging criteria.

Over 40 judges are involved in the UK-based competition, including professionals drawn from leading retail chains, wholesalers, distributors, and on-trade groups across a variety of channels and disciplines.
Gibson’s 2020 ‘The Dirtman’ Shiraz was also awarded a Gold Medal in the competition results.

“After being out walking vineyards picking the 2022 crop, having dodged hail and all that the last year has thrown us, it’s bloody good to hear our efforts are paying off”, said Rob Gibson.

“This is our 14th vintage of Reserve Shiraz but our very first entry into the London Wine Competition – what a way to start!”, he added.

The 2019 ‘Reserve’ Shiraz vintage was a blend of over 30 individual Shiraz parcels, a reflection of Gibson’s philosophy of layering flavour and complexity from various sites and growers across the Barossa.

Recently released in Australia, it is available for purchase through Gibson’s Cellar Door and website, as well as select retailers in each state.
