Giraffe calf discovers her shadow at Monarto Safari Park

A video of the female calf shows her acquainting herself with her own shadow, moving her legs and seeming confused when her shadow does the same motions.

How cute is this?!

A giraffe calf at South Australia’s Monarto Safari Park has made a new friend – her shadow!

A video of the female calf shows her acquainting herself with her own shadow, moving her legs and seeming confused when her shadow does the exact same motions.

The video’s narration is provided by Mark Mills, Senior Keeper of Ungulates at Monarto Safari Park. He is one of the employees who is currently bottle-feeding the calf.

This is just the latest of a slew of excitement in SA zoos. This week, Zoos SA announced that Mishry, a two-year-old red panda, has moved into the Bamboo Forest exhibit at Adelaide Zoo. The panda arrived at Adelaide Zoo on 13 April after travelling from Taronga Zoo and spending four weeks in quarantine before being moved into her exhibit.

As for the little giraffe calf, Monarto Safari Park says she’s doing just fine after her recent discovery.

“Keepers report that the calf and her shadow are both doing well,” they say.
