From South Australia’s South East to the streets of London and buzzing Bali, Speech Pathologist Alexandra Kay has lived and worked in some diverse locations.

The 29 year old, who is now based in North Adelaide, grew up amongst the Coonawarra vineyards, spent years working in London, and recently returned from a 12 month volunteer assignment in Indonesia.

“I worked alongside my local counterparts in Bali as a Speech Pathology Advisor, building their knowledge and capacity to work with local people that have communication and swallowing difficulties,” Alexandra says.

“It was so rewarding to see my colleagues learn new skills and realise they were capable of doing things that they never thought possible.”

Alexandra’s experience was made possible through the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program, an Australian Government initiative. Alexandra enjoyed her experience so much, that she is now working at Scope Global as the Disability Development Officer.

The program offers a range of opportunities for the Australian community to share skills and foster linkages with people and organisations in developing countries; to make a difference as part of Australia’s aid program.

Alexandra is one of two Australian volunteers who will be sharing their experiences at the Adelaide Information Session on Wednesday, March 11. Attendees can find out more about the AVID program, have their questions answered, and hear about the experiences of other volunteers.

“Volunteering overseas was a fantastic experience that taught me more about culture, developing relationships, teaching others, and more – I definitely recommend it to everyone,” Alexandra says.

“Attending an Information Session is the perfect opportunity to find out more about life in a developing country, and if the program is right for you.”

Scope Global is one of three organisations who deliver the AVID program across Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. Australian volunteers are fully supported with return flights, insurance, in-country support, training, medical checks, and living and accommodation allowances.
