Mad March has officially arrived! Here is a curated guide of festival and non-festival activities ranging from comedy shows to polo tournaments.

Adelaide’s festival month, often dubbed “Mad March,” is here! If you’re overwhelmed by all the fun activities happening this month, don’t worry––we’ve got you covered for all of South Australia’s best events.

Nickname “Mad March” comes from all of Adelaide’s simultaneous festivals. While we could list endless events associated with each of the festivals––the Adelaide Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival and Writers Week––we’ve decided to streamline those for you, and provide lots of other exciting events as well.

So, get amongst it all, Adelaide. Here are our top 10 things to do in March 2023, festival-related and otherwise.

Adelaide Fringe Festival | Feb 17 – Mar 19

It’s the one event all South Australians look forward to more than any other and the Adelaide Fringe Festival has just announced its 2023 dates.

Kicking off on Friday February 17^th, the month-long music and arts festival is the biggest selling festival in the country and the second biggest Fringe festival in the world after Edinburgh.

The festival continues through March and you can check out some of the amazing shows on offer at the tail-end of this guide.

WOMADelaide Festival | Mar 10 – 13

This year’s lineup once again sees some huge names in music and performance with Florence + The Machine, The Proclaimers, Bon Iver and Place Des Anges leading the pack.

Colombian supergroup, Ondatrópica, Grammy-award winning American blues artist, Fantastic Negrito, as well as the Australian premiere of German ‘techno marching band’, MEUTE, will also take to the stage.

The ‘World’s Festival’ was established in 1992 and WOMADelaide is a unique part of the Australian festival culture. WOMAD strives to showcase ‘the best, the essential – and the surprising – in music, arts, dance and ideas from around the world.’

_SOUTHSTART REVIVAL | March 9-11

_SOUTHSTART, Australia’s only flagship technology, impact and innovation festival that strives to connect influential leaders and investors. Held annually in SA since 2013, it is not a traditional conference but a conversation with a series of networking forums curated across three days.

Taking place during SA’s ‘Mad March’ festival season, _SOUTHSTART has a thematically curated program spread across a multitude of iconic South Australian destinations and venues from Lot Fourteen’s Stone & Chalk, Seppeltsfield in the Barossa and the National Wine Centre.

WOMAD | March 11-14

South Australia’s most beloved music, arts and culture festival, WOMAdelaide, is returning to Adelaide Botanic Gardens this March long weekend, bringing with it a jam-packed vibrant line-up filled with epic Australian and international acts for its 30^th year.

Headlining the four-day event will be Paul Kelly, Courtney Barnett and Yolgnu superstar Baker Boy, as well as A.B Original, The Cat Empire and renowned electronic producer Motez.

Wine n Dine | March 12

Wine n’ Dine is taking food and wine tasting to a whole new level this March 12.

The self-guided tour features four of Adelaide’s best hospitality venues, where guests will be treated to an all-inclusive premium four-course lunch, complete with carefully-selected wine pairings. Meander between Stem Bar & Restaurant, AURORA Restaurant, Fugazzi Bar & Dining and La Buvette to taste an incredible line up of food and drinks.

Grapes of Mirth | March 13

Grapes of Mirth are coming back to Howard Vineyard for Mad March, and they’re bringing the very best in Australian comedy with them. As wine and comedy are two of our favourite things, it always feels magical when they’re brought together.

Join MC Mel Buttle and comedians Georgie Carrol, Nikki Britton, Luke Heggie, Lehmo and Dilruk Jayasinha for a barrel of laughs while sipping on tipples of Howard Vineyard wines, Pirate Life beers and Lobo ciders in the late summer sun.

Castaway | March 18

Is there a better way to wrap up festival seasons than on the beach? Castaway Festival is hitting the tides and arriving at Glenelg on Friday, March 18, 2022. Returning to SA for the fourth year, Castaway’s lineup is just as epic as ever.

The sun-soaked event features a stellar line-up of artists, featuring PNAU, What So Not, Riton, Confidence Man, WAFIA, CHOOMBA, KLP and Tomi Bahama in the ocean breeze on the iconic Glenelg shorefront.

By the C | March 19

By The C will be heading back to the iconic Glenelg Beach and music lovers are set for a stellar line-up of artists featuring Jimmy Barnes, Mondo Rock, Jon Stevens, Diesel, Vanessa Amorosi, and 1927.

It’s the perfect place to bask in the sun and ocean breeze while kicking back and listening to some of Australia’s best live music.

Summersalt | March 20

Music lovers, get ready for a set for a stellar line-up of artists, featuring The Teskey Brothers, Xavier Rudd, Kasey Chambers, Holy Holy, The Dreggs and Tulliah, by the sea breeze at Glenelg Beach.

Think homegrown talent, beachside location, family-friendly activities and Little Nippers Kids Zone, local market stalls, lush lawns, food trucks, and a selection of refreshing beverages perfect for a day in the sunshine.

Port Adelaide Wonderwalls | until March 20

Discover a hidden world at historic Port Adelaide this summer with The BIG Picture Series – an immersive, self-guided tour of the Port as part of the 2022 Adelaide Fringe festival.

This is your opportunity to see the port-side region’s ‘Wonderwalls’ in an entirely different light complete with Augmented Reality sculptures and animated works. Running until March 20, the family-friendly event features eight new Augmented Reality artworks by a stellar lineup of talented local and international artists.

Boheme on the Beach | March 26

Get ready to experience a night of romance and opera under the stars, with the State Opera bringing its one-night-only opera spectacular, Boheme on the Beach, to Glenelg this March 26.

The state company is bringing Puccini’s epic love story about a group of friends and their highs, lows, loves and losses, to vivid life, with Australia’s best opera voices and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Set to be an evening you will never forget, enjoy a truly unforgettable evening of opera under the setting sun, with fine food, wine and the very best company.

Adelaide Fringe Festival | 18 February – 20 March

Immerse yourself in all that South Australia’s flagship calendar event has to offer, whether it be comedy, theatre, cabaret, circus, dance, film, music, visual art or design, all while dining and exploring the night away.

Adelaide Festival | March 4 – March 20

The annual Adelaide Festival is one of Australia’s largest multi-arts festivals, with a strong tradition of innovation and excellence. Showcasing the best in theatre, dance, music, literature, the visual arts and new media, from around Australia and the world, the Adelaide Festival is not to be missed.

9 World premieres, 6 Australian premieres and 17 shows playing exclusively in Adelaide will demonstrate the Festival’s tenacity and creative ambition and the adventurous spirit of artists from around the corner and around the world.

While there are heaps of diverse artworks to explore, we’ve already highlighted the Summerhouse making its return, and the incredible renovations revealed just in time for the Festival fun.

Adelaide Writers’ Week | 27 February – 4 March

Writers from Australia and around the world will come together live and virtually explore the theme A Better Picture at the 37th Adelaide Writers’ Week this March 5 to March 10. The jam-packed and star-studded six-day event features 165 of the world’s best literary minds who will inspire, challenge and delight audiences.

Join Grace Tame, Jess Hill, Malcolm Turnbull, Antia Heiss, Kevin Rudd, Bruce Pascoe, Jane Caro, Liane Moriarty and more as they explore, entice and excite audiences this Adelaide Writers’ Week. Even better: Patricia Piccinini’s Skywhales will be soaring over the CBD on March 5 too, to celebrate the glittery literary event for the new children’s book Every Heart Sings.
