The Adelaide Events You Need To Check Out This May

The rumours that Adelaide hibernates at this time of year are just NOT true! Check out our guide to May and you will see why…

Looking for what’s kicking in May? May we help you? Oh God, that was terrible. Here’s what’s happening in our beautiful state now that the leaves are falling and the silly season has well and truly subsided. Having said that, the rumours that Adelaide hibernates around this time of year are just NOT true. As you can see, there’s plenty to keep you busy…

May 1- EcoCaddy Turns One! This brilliant Adelaide business is celebrating one year on our streets and we’re joining them. The zippy little eco-friendly service have big plans for the next year and we can’t wait to hear them all while listening to Pilot Records spinning tunes and knocking back some beverages from Pirate Life Brewing and Delinquente Wine Co. The team from Cafe Troppo will also be partying. We’re keen to check out what the Tricycle Challenge Course is all about too.

May 1- Games of Rhones Technically a Tasting Australia event but we think this one deserves its own section. Winter may not be coming yet (wahoo!) but wine certainly is. Stroll the stalls and sample away at some of the best vino offerings from here and overseas. Don’t forget to taste some cheese too! If you want something more tailored, head to the Rhone Bar and chat with sommeliers. Jon Snow might know nothing, but you certainly won’t by the end of this!

May 1- Little Miss Crab Shack’s Final Hoorah Sing with us. Goodbye my lover. Goodbye my friend. No longer will we be able to giggle at the ‘We’ve Got Crabs’ t-shirts adorning the backs of the cute bartenders. It’s time to farewell Little Miss Crab Shack and Dive Bar. But fear not, because we know the Little Miss Group can’t sit still for long. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

May 1- 8-  Tasting Australia Food glorious food! What more could you wish for?! Sorry, apparently there’s something about May that has us in a musical mood. But why wouldn’t you sing with joy with a world class food event like Tasting Australia on our doorsteps again. There’s a plethora of brilliant events to get along (check out our articles on some of the more alternative events here and here) to or just visit the free ‘Town Square’ in Victoria Square and explore.

May 2- Liza Emanuele ‘Shadow Play’ A/W16 Launches The wait is over ladies and gents. Liza is back with her new collection to keep us snuggly warm and ultra chic for the cooler seasons. Make some wardrobe space. You’re gonna need it.

May 4- May the Fourth Planetarium Experience Star Wars fans, the Adelaide event of the year (apart from George Lucas’s coveted visit to the Myer Centre) has arrived. Get to the planetarium to enjoy a meal and drinks accompanied by all night activities and a best dressed competition. There will be live Star Wars themed music and performances too.

May 5- Cinco De Mayo As we had to correct someone lately, no, this is not the Mexican festival of mayonnaise. But what was once a day to commemorate the Mexican army beating the French occupation in 1862 has since become a weekend long party celebrating all things Mexico. In our experience that consists of tequila, burritos and Coronas (not actually Mexican either.) We tip our sombreros to history and apologise for the indiscretions that will undoubtedly occur in the name of this day. For specific parties head along to Cinco De Mayo at The Moseley or just whip up some nachos and do some shots at home.

May 5- Elle & Elka Fashion Parade & Mothers Day Lunch Gorgeous local designers Elle & Elka Boutique will showcase their Autumn/Winter 2016 Fashion whilst you and your mum enjoy a two course lunch. There will of course be champagne on arrival to help you celebrate and door prize tickets too. Money raised on the day will go to the Daw House Hospice Foundation.

May 6- #FashionFirst at Hotel Richmond Get ready for this showcase of local designers to display their creative talents! Kicking off at 7pm in their First Bar, Lounge & Restaurant, this is a complimentary show for all guests who attend. But it isn’t just about the fashion… A DJ will be spinning some tunes and if you show them your invitation or the Facebook event post then your first drink is on them!

May 6-8- Bowerbird Could the timing be any more perfect? This market will be just your ticket to finding your Mum everything that she could want for Mother’s Day! With over 150 hand-picked stalls including a selection of the best Australian independent designers, this three day market extravaganza has it all! Find out more here.

May 7-8- Gumeracha Medieval Fair Ever feel like you were born in the wrong decade? What about the wrong century? Step back in time to the Medieval World. This fair has a brilliant array of events to keep your medieval mind happy. There will be armed combat, jousting, archery from the ages alongside food vendors serving traditional spit roasts and other historical treats. A Punch and Judy show for the little kids (and big kids at heart) as well as artisans and merchants peddling their wares. Make sure to dress up.

May 7- SA Day Should we make this a public holiday? We think so. Celebrate how good our state is with this party.  From Frog Cakes to Pie Floater to Iced Coffee and more. Local breweries will be strutting their stuff too. You know you sing along every time the Foodland song comes on the radio so show your patriotism and celebrate the mighty South Aussies.

May 7- True Grit Adelaide Fitness fanatics, your May event is calling. Get grubby, get sweaty and hopefully get the glory in this 10-12km obstacle course around the beautiful Caudo Vineyards. You’ll face over 30 challenges that will no doubt leave you aching, but somehow thirsty for more.

May 7- Oaks Day Also known as Ladies Day. Yay! Our favourite! Get to Morphetteville Racecourse for the Schweppes Oaks Day celebrations including plenty of fashion, of course.

May 7- The Women Who Made Tea What It Is Today Who knew tea had so many tales to be told? We know plenty about the males in this area but the stories of the women are vibrant and hilarious. There’s a mix of tales and tastings, plus you get the cost of the ticket back in free tea! Take your mum along and spoil her with something different that she’ll love just before Mother’s Day.

May 8- Mothers Day Not much more to say here. Shower the lady who brought you here in love. Read our full guide here.

May 11- A Night of Pizza & Vino with Bent Creek Wines Well there’s also probably not that much to say here either. The title covers that for us. Amazing wines by Bent Creek and very importantly SIX incredible courses of Italian Pizzas and “other amazing items” ! Book it in quick on 8227 0961 or email [email protected]

May 13- Uncorked with Tidswell Wines Uncorked with Tidswell Wines We’ll always speak pretty highly of Uncorked at our gorgeous National Wine Centre. Why? Because it’s free entry for your Friday drinks and you get to sample some of the greatest wines the state has to offer and kick off the weekend in perfect style. There’s optional Meet The Maker classes if you’re so inclined. Plus acoustic live tunes and tapas.

May 13- 3rd Annual Blokes Night Out Have you been meaning to organise that boys night for a while now? Or do you need a girls night without your significant man friend? Send him along to the Kensi’s Kings Room and for only $40, you/he can enjoy a Schnitzel and 4 local beers, house spirit or house wine. Plus you can watch Adelaide take on Geelong at the MCG. Lads, where you at?

May 14- Soul Shine Workshop We love the work of local PT Tahlia Pretty of TPPT (yeah that’s a mouthful even when we haven’t been sipping vino!) This is her last Soul Shine Workshop for a bit so you have to make sure you slide into this one. If you need to cleanse the soul and get the good vibes going join her for a meditation session, yoga session, mindfulness session and a supplied vegan brekky too! It’s all about meeting like-minded women and celebrating a little bitta goodness 🙂

May 14- Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend 2016 marks 22 years of the Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend. It’s always a marvellous weekend long celebration plus it was the first of it’s kind in the country. Meet the makers, taste the mighty fine Clare Valley Produce, nibble on the local regional produce and listen to some live tunes. There are specific events all weekend or just get along to the markets to have a sample of it all.

May 14- A Present of Bullets: Crime In The Archives For the local history buffs. Down at the Exeter they’ll done a little digging and discovered some “scandalous, tragic and unusual  stories hidden away in our records.” Ok, now we’re intrigued.

May 14- Derby Day This one is considered one of the most prestigious days in the Aussie racing calendar. So if you have any hot tips of horses… now is the time to put them to the test (and tell us, we’re useless.) But most importantly this is your day for chic monochrome fashion. Black and white is the traditional theme so make sure you’ve channeled Cruella Deville’s wardrobe for this brilliant racing day out.

May 14- Wildlife Expo Family friendly fun. Head on down to the showgrounds with the little ones and snuggle up to some cute and cuddly characters. There will be all kinds of wildlife that you can get up close and personal with, whilst learning a thing or two. There’s plenty of extra fun activities on the day too.

May 15- REST RESTORE & REVIVE Wellness Retreat Sometimes after the crazy season we just need to rest, restore and revive our minds and bodies. Hahndorf couldn’t be more beautiful in Autumn so what better place to do all this than Hahndorf House’s Wellness Retreat? Enjoy a healthy vegan lunch provided by Adelaide Hill’s vegan cafe The Little Secret Garden then yoga, pilates, meditation and holistic healing. You also have the option to add a spa, massage, reiki session and other beautiful treatments.

May 19- The Hackney’s 100 Mile Dinner We love the concept of paddock to plate, sustainable dining and keeping food miles short. Due to the grand success of the first 100 Mile Dinner the Hackney are bringing it back. Stunning wines from First Drop and a gorgeous meal from the Hackney kitchens all sourced from within 100 Miles of the hotel itself. Brilliant.

May 20 –The Cellar Door Sessions From those that brought us The Porch Sessions comes the somewhat cosier Winter Cellar Door Sessions. We accept. There haven’t been many details released yet but watch this space. Snuggled up with a shiraz listening to acoustic tunes sounds like heaven.

May 20 –Bianca Del Rio, Not Today Satan For those that are fans of Rupaul’s Drag Race, get so keen you’re uncomfortable. Bianca Del Rio is on her way and y’all know SHE’S THE BEST ONE.

May 21- An Afternoon In The Mechanics Garden This brilliant outer suburbs restaurant is filled with funky fresh Mexican vibes. Their now hosting an afternoon fiesta with Shut The Gate Wines where you can sip on some of their mighty fine produce and taste the wonders that appear from the Mechanic’s kitchen.

May 27- Adelaide Gaol Overnight Investigation Let’s get creepy. Those that loved the Exeter’s crime stories evening will probably love this one too. Although leaning slightly more to the paranormal, this overnight experience delves into the history of Australia’s longest continually operating gaol.

May 28- Feed You Face Hosted by Market2Market, this event has over 100 vendors showing up to help you Feed Your Face. From carts, to tents, to trucks there will be bit sized bits of heaven to suit all tastebuds. Plus live music, a market, a bar (wahoo) as well as plenty for the kids including pony rides, petting zoo and a jumping castle!

May 28- Hot Dub Time Machine It’s back again. The world’s greatest musical time travel party. No matter what decade you were born there will be something here to get your dancing shoes shuffling. Counting down to present day, you won’t

All month

South Australia’s History Festival We always hear that our great state is stooped in history, but how often to we learn the tales of days passed? There’s plenty of events to learn more about SA and what brought us to where we are today.
