Fig season is in full swing in the Adelaide Hills, and Glen Ewin Estate is marking the occasion with a long lunch dedicated to the orchard’s most famous fruit.

This Sunday, 15 March, the historic Houghton estate will host its Fig Harvest Lunch, inviting guests to gather among the leafy surrounds for a relaxed afternoon where figs appear in dish after dish.

Running from 12pm to 3pm, the two-and-a-half-hour experience pairs Glen Ewin’s Gatehouse Rosé package with a generous sharing-style menu designed to showcase the estate’s seasonal bounty.

The feast begins with a Glen Ewin antipasto platter featuring local cured meats, fig and chilli chutney, and marinated and pickled vegetables. Estate fig sourdough with house-made dukkah, olive oil and balsamic fig glaze will also make its way around the table.

Fresh Brown Turkey figs take centre stage in a dish with whipped ricotta, tomato, black pepper and herb oil, highlighting the fruit at its peak.

For the main event, guests will share deboned roast lemon and thyme chicken finished with a fig and vinegar emulsion, served alongside a green bean salad with fresh figs, caramelised walnut and feta.

Dessert continues the fig-filled theme with a fig leaf panna cotta topped with fig gin caramel and macerated figs.

When fig picking season officially hit Adelaide last month, Willa Wauchope of Willabrand Australia and Glen Ewin Estate told us, “We’re really excited to see these few people back. We can see the fig fruits coming through now. So, the timing is going to be really good.”

The long lunch celebrates the property that is home to thousands of fig trees, and each summer the orchard draws visitors to the Adelaide Hills for seasonal picking, produce and events.

With figs at their sweetest and the estate’s picturesque grounds providing the backdrop, the Fig Harvest Lunch offers a chance to slow down, share a table, and enjoy the harvest in wonderful company.

Tickets are $84 per person, offering the perfect excuse to spend a Sunday afternoon savouring figs and their many delicious forms in the Adelaide Hills.
