The historic air-raid shelter will open for summer showcasing fascinating exhibits, rare memorabilia, and compelling stories.
The air-raid shelter is open for the summer from January 19th. The historic centre will welcome visitors on the third Sunday of every month from 1pm to 3pm. The site will also host special openings on ANZAC Day, Friday 25th of April from 11am to 1pm, and Remembrance Day, Tuesday 11th of November from 11:30am to 1:30pm. The shelter is closed during the months of June, July, August and December.
The Glenelg Air-Raid Shelter, constructed in 1942, played a vital role in Australia’s World War II communications network, standing as a symbol of resilience and preparedness during a time of global conflict.
Today, this historic structure offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, housing a rich collection of exhibitions and memorabilia that highlight the wartime experiences of Holdfast Bay and its community. Visitors can explore personal stories, photographs, and artefacts that capture the bravery, sacrifices, and everyday lives of residents impacted by war, including the pivotal events of WWII.
Run entirely by dedicated volunteers, the shelter offers a welcoming space for history enthusiasts and locals alike. Volunteers are always open to listen to personal war stories or family memories, preserving the legacy of those who served and endured.
Visitors should note entry is only accessible via a steep set of stairs. A small gold coin donation is encouraged to support the shelter’s continued operations and preservation efforts.
The Glenelg Air-Raid Shelter has partnered with Children’s University Australasia (Adelaide) to bring the historic space to life, promoting active learning and participation in visits. The shelter will offer a self-guided quiz on the air-raid shelter and its history. Kids will also be able to take their passport to a volunteer at the entrance after completing the questionnaire for a stamp. A Glenelg Air-Raid Shelter volunteer said, “It’s a great piece of history where the kids will enjoy learning and exploring.”
Step back in time, discover hidden stories, and experience history. This summer, the Glenelg Air-Raid Shelter reopens its doors to inspire, remember, and connect generations.
