The New Years Eve fireworks are under threat, leading the Holdfast Bay council to ask for more support.

Mayor Amanda Wilson says that while this New Years Eve fireworks will go ahead, future displays are in doubt. Pre-COVID, the fireworks attracts huge crowds to the Bay and Brighton, but the displays are not cheap.

The fireworks displays cost the council around $200,000 per year – 10% of which is funded by the state government. As the Elder Park fireworks have been scrapped this year, the Holdfast Bay mayor has written to the premier, calling for more support.

Mayor Wilson says the Holdfast Bay council will be the “only council staging a New Years Eve fireworks event”, and since there will be an estimated 100,000 visitors, Holdfast Bay “has to have the facilities to cater for that”.

Much of the cost will go towards additional security, anti-terrorism measures and medical support.

In addition to further funding, the Holdfast Bay council is also looking for more commercial sponsorship.
