The 2000s, like the decades prior, has played a part in shaping the music industry. Several notable and influential figures have left their mark on the industry — some for good, others, not so much. Riding on the successful Fringe production 80’s Ladies, Chloe Castledine is back with a new production of epic proportions — Noughties Girl: Hits of the Y2K.

Presented as part of the Glenelg Winter Arts Festival, Noughties Girl: Hits of the Y2K celebrates all of the musical goodness that came out of the 2000’s in a tight, sixty-minute celebration. Throughout the show, Castledine kept her conversation with the audience between numbers at a minimum, allowing the maximum number of hits to be packed into this high energy trip.

Opening with Black Eyed Peas 2004 mega hit Let’s Get It Started, Castledine set the tone for the evening — it was a party and we, the audience, were all invited. With hit after hit, Castledine reminded us how much good music came out of the 2000s. Castledine, along with her musical director David Goodwin, created clever mashups that combined and overlaid song after song, sometimes with the bassline of one song underpinning the melody of a different song in a wonderful display of arranging skills. Particular favourite was Maroon 5’s 2002 hit This Love into Wheatus’s 2000 phenomenon Teenage Dirtbag.

Noughties Girl: Hits of the Y2K doesn’t just celebrate the high energy, uptempo hits of the decade. In a wonderfully evocative acoustic set, Castledine proves she doesn’t need much more than her powerful and emotive voice and a piano to capture a crowd. This stripped back set featured Christina Aguilera’s 2002 hit Beautiful, Coldplay’s 2000 anthem Yellow, Nelly Furtado’s 2000 haunting I’m Like a Bird, Vanessa Carlton’s 2002 smash hit A Thousand Miles and Train’s 2001 chart topping Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me). It’s always great when you see an artist of the calibre of Castledine bring the mood down with a string of ballads but still holding the audience captivated.

Rounding out the celebration of the 2000’s Castledine brought it home with two of the biggest hits out of the decade — The Killers 2004 banger Mr. Brightside and Queen Beyoncé’s 2003 chart topper Crazy in Love.

Castledine was supported by members of The Cast — featuring Matthew Baluyot on guitar, Alex Flood on drums and Jon Wilson on bass. The set list travelled through a range of genres, and these fine musicians switched styles with ease and professionalism. Castledine was also supported by the sublime vocals of Winston Howard, who brought his own unique spin to some of the biggest R&B numbers from the decade.

It wouldn’t be a Chloe Castledine and The Cast production without the sensational work of Impact Entertainment, choreographed by the insanely talented Shenayde Wilkinson-Sarti. Chymz Angeles, Allycia Angeles, Amy Gallery and Elyssa Lane supported Castledine in the vast majority of the numbers with tight, era-reminiscent choreography, full of energy and drive.

With only one more show this Sunday July 23 6:00pm, grab any tickets that are left and take a trip back to the Noughties and let Chloe Castledine, The Cast and Impact Entertainment rock you to the core and fill you with nostalgia.
