With international travel on hold for the foreseeable future, the chance of getting yourself to Greece is slim.

Lucky for us, the taste of Greece is coming to Adelaide as The Local Greek will be opening its doors soon.

Owner Niki Tsagklis says she and her husband Vasili have called upon their Greek heritage to bring traditional Hellenic street food to Glenelg North.

“We’ve come from a family of food forever,” Niki says.

“Just being Greek, thats what you do.”

“We’ve had other restaurants and cafes as well, and this will add to that for us.”

A chef from Greece will accompany the pair to craft their dishes as they will cook meat using a traditional lava rock method rather than the popular coal method.

Nikki says the Local Greek team aims to serve up traditional Greek foods with modern flavours, differing from westernised Greek cuisine you would often see around Adelaide.

“We’re bringing a traditional way of how you would be eating a Greek yiros in the streets of Greece ,” Niki says.

“There’s no tomato sauce, no caramelised onions.

“We’ve chosen a grill that cooks on lava rock and will cook the meat tenderly.

“It is the authentic way.”

The eatery will provide dine-in and takeaway options with a future possibility of a liquor licence.

Niki says the Local Greek will cater to people around the Glenelg area looking to experience the authentic taste of Greece for themselves.

“We’re trying to appeal to anybody that’s in the area,” Niki says.

“Families, young families, anybody that wants to eat healthy that’s in the area.

“That’s why we’re called the Local Greek.”

Niki says the focus on young families follows her own experience as a mum trying to find healthy take out options for her kids.

“I’m as mum as well, over COVID I struggled with food, trying to come up with ideas,” Niki says.

“But really at the end of the day, how many times can you eat pizza or chicken and chips.”

You’ll be able to find The Local Greek at 92-98 Old Tapleys Hill Rd, Glenelg North.
