Global cruise giant Carnival Adventure giving locals the rare chance to begin voyages from Adelaide

Carnival Cruise Line has announced Carnival Adventure will be based in Adelaide for the 2027–28 cruise season, giving locals the rare chance to begin their voyage right from home.

South Australian cruise lovers are in for a treat, with global cruise giant Carnival Cruise Line set to homeport in Adelaide for the very first time.

Carnival has announced that its 2836-guest Carnival Adventure will be based in Adelaide for the 2027–28 cruise season, giving locals the rare chance to begin their voyage right from home.

Five new cruises are already on sale, including itineraries to Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln ranging from three to five nights. A three-night one-way cruise from Adelaide to Sydney will also depart on 14 March 2028.

The new program represents a 26% increase in cruise capacity for Adelaide departures compared with the current season. This is milestone that’s expected to deliver a welcome boost for local tourism and hospitality.

RAA Travel General Manager Gina Norman said the news signals a huge opportunity for local travellers and the South Australian economy.

“This is truly exciting news for South Aussies – for the first time ever, we’ll see one of the world’s biggest cruise lines homeport right here in Adelaide,” Ms Norman said.

“This move marks a significant step in bringing more convenient cruise holiday options to South Australian travellers, while further supporting the state’s visitor economy,” she said.

“It means locals can start their cruise holiday from their own backyard without having to fly interstate first, saving both time and money.”

“Having Carnival Adventure based in Adelaide also brings a welcome boost for our tourism sector, from local suppliers and hospitality to tour operators across regional South Australia.”

“Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln are already iconic cruise destinations, and now they’ll be featured on even more itineraries, showcasing the very best of our state to the world.”

The move signals growing confidence in South Australia as a cruise destination and arrives at a time of major change in the national cruise landscape.

Carnival Cruise Line will soon become the only global brand operating year-round in Australia and New Zealand following the departure of P&O Cruises, Disney, Cunard, and Virgin Voyages.

Carnival’s newly announced program features more than 200 cruises across four ships — Adventure, Splendor, Encounter, and Luminosa — visiting 39 destinations across Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific.
