The Adelaide Fringe is packed with hundreds of fascinating, thrilling, and alluring shows taking place throughout the city and its surroundings. This year at the Fringe, you can even get your hands dirty mining for opals with TV personalities in the opal capital of the world.
You read that right. If you’re interested in getting down and dirty in Coober Pedy’s famous open cut opal mine, you can! It’s less of a Fringe “show” and more of a hands-on adventure, allowing avid opal hunters the experience of opal mining with all the grit and excitement that come with it.
At the Opal Mining Experience, you can team up with Dan and Renee from Outback Opal Hunters to search for the elusive gems under a starlit desert night sky. Roll up your sleeves and get stuck into the hunt with picks, jackhammers, and UV black lights while a 50-tonne Excavator reveals never before seen opal bearing ground.
This family-friendly adventure takes place in a real mine with real opal experts. With two generations of opal mining under their belts, Dan and Renee have developed efficient techniques and interactive experiences in an easy-to-access location. There’s no need for ladders or winches; you can drive right into the open-sky mine.
Now, of course, machinery can be a little noisy, conditions can get dusty, and surfaces can be rough, but Dan and Renee are there to make this experience as safe and enjoyable as possible.
