Goblincore goes viral for Spotify Wrapped Day

Spotify recented added a feature that categorises your music into moods. Now you can feel ‘Pumpkin Spice’, ‘Romantic Goo’ and ‘Goblincore’.

When you reviewed your Spotify Wrapped yesterday, we bet you didn’t expect to see ‘Goblincore’ in your top genres! Apparently it’s a common genre for 2022, but if you didn’t know what it meant, you’re not alone.

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past 24 hours, the major music streaming platform celebrated one of its biggest days of the year – Spotify Wrapped. This is where Spotify listeners can view their most listened to songs, bands and genres of 2022, courtesy of a playlist and slideshow curated by Spotify. This year, the Spotify Wrapped lists took a strange turn.

Spotify recently added a feature that categorises your music into moods, named after popular internet aesthetics. According to Spotify, you can feel like ‘Pumpkin Spice’, ‘Romantic Goo’, ‘Indie Heads’, and even ‘Goblincore’. Yes, Goblincore.

While Spotify didn’t elaborate on what Goblincore means, Fandom Wiki defines it as an “aesthetic based on the appreciation of aspects of nature not typically regarded as beautiful”. Moreover, Goblincore refers to people’s desire to find beauty in nature’s “ugliness”, such as moss, fungi, and hoard-able shiny objects.

Essentially the slightly darker younger of cottagecore, Goblincore has more than 500 million views on TikTok and it often seen as a safe space online for non-binary people. The aesthetic also embodies the desire to “get away from societal standards” and abandon modern day consumerism.

With this context, we can see how Goblincore could be potentially translate to music. Perhaps Spotify is trying to say “this music isn’t exactly mainstream, but it’s beautiful to you so we’re not going to yuck your yum”?

While Wrapped Day has become a significant annual celebration for music lovers, it always goes viral for one reason or another. This year, Goblincore. Next year? We can only guess!
