Gobsmacked! – 2012 Cabaret Fringe

Presented by Nikki Aitken
Reviewed Saturday 30th June 2012

In a series of linked, comical vignettes, a single straight girl hopes to find love. The unfolding of her tale, and that of a melodrama actor, is underscored by a current of loneliness that is beautifully and progressively revealed by songstress and comedienne, Nikki Aitken.

Accompanying her on keyboard is the songwriter, Jamie Burgess, as her "best gay boyfriend" who entertains with interludes between scenes, include a retro sing-a-long and some general comical banter.

It's Aitken's show however. Her voice is stunning, her face expressive, and her comic timing impeccable, nowhere more so than her morning-after skit, wailing "no no no no no" from Burgess's best and funniest song of the night.

It was another disappointingly short season but one to watch out for if it returns.
