Good Gilbert, Goodwood’s new neighbourhood bar is about to open

Good Gilbert won’t draw away from the line-up of quality cafes and eateries along Goodwood Road, instead adding something new to the strip.

Goodwood Road’s newest bar is set to open doors with a soft opening this Sunday.

As the brainchild of Adelaide hospo heavyweights, Wilson Shawyer (Commute and Hellbound), Jason Barber (Morning Coffees and Konbini) and David Train, Good Gilbert will fill a gap in Goodwood’s bar offering.

Wilson says that the bar will serve wines from around the world with (hopefully) 300 different labels on show.

“What we want to do is kind of bring the availability for people who want to travel and experience things from around the world and bring it to Goodwood,” Wilson says.

“We’re aiming to achieve what is a central sort of meeting spot for the people around Goodwood and surrounding suburbs.

“People can come in and have a really lovely glass of wine, or they can have a coffee and a light snack – or even a cocktail should they fancy it.”

Wilson says the venture builds on more than two decades of friendship for he and David.

“David and I have been working together since we were like, 15, when his dad owned a café in Sydney,” Wilson says.

“Then we both went off to London. I stayed there for 10 years and worked my way around the wine industry there, and David ran off to Germany to explore the coffee industry.

“We then met Jason when we when we all ended up back in Adelaide.”

The bar will be in the former Two Sisters Food & Wine site, with an interior inspired by Goodwood Road’s quaint and earthy glory.

The build of Good Gilbert is entirely courtesy of the trio.

Wilson says Good Gilbert won’t draw away from the line-up of quality cafes and eateries along Goodwood Road, instead adding something new to the strip.

“There’s a lot of really cool food operators [on Goodwood Road] and what we didn’t want to do is jam another one in there,” Wilson says.

“We just conceptualised what was going on around there and what we thought that Goodwood was putting out.

The bar plans to host the likes of street events at the end of each month, working work with local businesses including boozy neighbour Suburban Taproom.

Good Gilbert will also put on Bagel Sundays, a collaboration with Frankly Bagels, held every second Sunday.

Good Gilbert’s soft opening will take place on Sunday 6 December, and can be found at 135B Goodwood Rd, Goodwood.
