Have you got a pest of an ex? Well, this Valentine’s Day, you’ve got a chance to feed them to a lizard. Yes, you read that right. So if chocolates and roses aren’t quite your vibe this February 14th, Wilbur’s Wildlife has a far more fitting alternative, one that involves a bug, a breakup and a very hungry lizard.
In a deliciously petty, but surprisingly wholesome twist on Valentine’s Day, South Australian wildlife educators Wilbur’s Wildlife are inviting locals to name a feeder insect after their ex, and then watch it get devoured.
Inspired by viral zoo fundraisers in the US, the Feed a Friend campaign has landed in Adelaide, giving locals a new way to help out. For a $5 or $10 donation, participants can nominate their ex’s name for a creepy-crawly snack. In return, they’ll get a video of that bug being enthusiastically snapped up by one of Wilbur’s native reptile residents.
And if you’re not keen on witnessing your ex reincarnated as a snack for a reptile, there are gentler options. You can donate fruit for a possum or, if you’re feeling dramatic, upgrade to purchasing a mouse for a snake.
The campaign will see half of all proceeds donated to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, with the remaining funds supporting Wilbur’s own breeding programs for endangered native species, including the Brush-tailed Bettong.

“We wanted to bring a bit of humour to a day that can be tough for some people,” shared Cale Russell, owner of Wilbur’s Wildlife. “It’s a fun way to ‘heal’ from the past while providing vital funding for our animals. Whether you’re celebrating a new love or burying an old one, you’re helping protect Australian biodiversity.”
So technically, feeding your ex to a lizard is an act of environmental generosity. Who knew?
For those feeling a little more romantic, Wilbur’s Wildlife is also hosting interactive Valentine’s Day shows at Wauwi Inparrila – Light Square, offering a more wholesome date night alternative.
Taking place on February 14th, the hands-on wildlife experience invites families, couples and animal lovers to meet, hold and feed a range of native animals like snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs and possums. Tickets are $15, which includes a $5 donation to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.
So if you’re looking for something a bit different to do this Valentine’s Day, this is just the thing!
