International jazz sensation Jazzmeia Horn is set to return to Adelaide this October, bringing with her a series of concerts, masterclasses, and an exciting new collaboration with local hip hop group DEM MOB.
Building on the success of her exclusive Australian appearance last year, Horn will once again enchant Adelaide’s jazz audience while mentoring the next generation of South Australian musicians. The three-time Grammy nominee will begin her Adelaide endeavours with a headline performance at the UKARIA Cultural Centre in Mount Barker on Sunday, October 27th.
In a special Australian collaboration, Horn will also team up with DEM MOB, students from the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music (CASM) at the University of Adelaide, and emerging jazz talent from the Elder Conservatorium of Music to create a brand-new track and music video.
Horn says: “I am so excited to be returning to Adelaide to mentor and perform with the next generation of homegrown jazz talent. I was completely blown away by the calibre of musicians from the Elder Conservatorium of Music last year; it was such an incredible experience performing with them.”
During her stay, Horn will also mentor and perform alongside top graduating jazz students at the Helpmann Academy’s annual “A Night of Jazz” event and awards, taking place at the Adelaide Town Hall on Thursday the 31st of October.
“I can’t wait to meet the students from CASM and work with DEM MOB to create something new… it’s going to be a pretty memorable couple of weeks”, says Horn.”
Professor Anna Goldsworthy, Director of Elder Conservatorium of Music, says: “Jazzmeia had a galvanising effect on our community during her visit last year. It was an immersive, empowering and for some, transformative experience. We are thrilled Jazzmeia returns in 2024, bringing her unique blend of artistry and pedagogical innovation not only to our jazz students but also to our Centre of Aboriginal Studies in Music. Exposure to an international artist of this calibre can have a profound impact on the career trajectory of young musicians, and are grateful to the Helpmann Academy for this remarkable opportunity.’
Jane MacFarlane, Helpmann Academy CEO also commented, saying: “The Helpmann Academy A Night of Jazz event and awards night is a highlight on the calendar for us, the University of Adelaide and our philanthropic partners. We are thrilled to be partnering with the City of Adelaide this year to showcase these incredibly talented emerging and established musicians at the iconic Adelaide Town Hall.”
For both jazz enthusiasts and students, Horn’s return will undoubtedly be a treat. Adelaide’s jazz scene is set to flourish under the guidance and inspiration of this multi-award winning artist, leaving a lasting impact on the future of jazz in our state.
