Children and young people with a care experience are being urged to apply for the new round of Dame Roma Mitchell grants to help them achieve personal goals, contribute to health and wellbeing and support educational opportunities.

The first round of the biannual State Government grants for 2021 open today and will close on Friday 12 March.

Last year, more than $190,000 was awarded to 225 applicants.
Minister for Child Protection Rachel Sanderson encouraged eligible young people under the age of 30 to apply for the grants.

“Through the Dame Roma Mitchell grants we want to give young people with a care experience the best opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Minister Sanderson.

“These grants play an important part in giving our young people the boost they need to achieve their goals, whether they be professional or social endeavors.

“Importantly, the grants provide a range of social, recreational and self-development opportunities, support independence, identity and health, and can also be used to support young people to re-engage in learning.

“For example, in previous years, grants have been used to buy text books, tools for apprenticeships, business expenses, pay for courses, health services or equipment, counselling, buy art materials, musical instruments and attend workshops, or household items.”

The Dame Roma Mitchell grants are primarily accessed by young people who have transitioned to independent living, as well as those living in kinship, foster and residential care.
