Grants of up to $30,000 are now available for Community Sheds across South Australia through the Grants SA Community Sheds program, supporting projects that promote inclusion and social connection.

The initiative is focused on improving the functionality and sustainability of these essential community resources.

A Community Shed is a not-for-profit space where locals can connect with the community, gain valuable skills, engage in hobbies and other activities, and build confidence along the way.

The Community Sheds program is designed to provide extra funding to grassroots organisations, helping them improve important inclusive spaces.

Applying for the grant could mean minor infrastructure enhancements, new tools and equipment, or additional safety measures. The grants are also looking to support sustainability projects alongside communal kitchen and garden resources. Volunteering and mentoring programs are also a key focus, with the grants aiming to support sheds in expanding their reach and impact.

The additional funding follows strong evidence of impact, with the Whyalla Men’s Shed standing out as a great example. This particular shed, which operates on a volunteer basis and has around 60 members, was a beneficiary of the 2022/23 funding.

Gary Misan from the Whyalla Men’s Shed said, “This funding allowed us to make much-needed upgrades to our workshop, which means our members can work more safely and comfortably. It’s made a real difference to how often people come in and how connected they feel.”

“For many of our members, the shed isn’t just about projects; it’s about purpose, mateship, and having a place where they feel valued and supported. This kind of support helps us keep that going,” Misan continued.

The Whyalla organisation plays a pivotal role in advancing mental health and well-being in its community. It offers a supportive environment where members can engage in hands-on activities, socialise, learn new skills, and participate in community service projects.

2025/26 funding specifically prioritises sheds that promote inclusion and actively engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, individuals with disabilities, those facing financial hardships, and residents of rural or remote areas.

Minister for Human Services, Nat Cook MP, said, “This funding helps ensure sheds remain welcoming, inclusive, and safe spaces for all members of the community.”

“We’re investing in local solutions to combat loneliness, support mental health, and create stronger communities.”

“Whether it’s through mentoring, volunteering, or just sharing a cuppa and a chat, sheds can change lives, and this program helps make that possible,” Cook added.

Applications for the 2025 and 2026 Grants SA Community Sheds are open as of now and will close at 3pm on 19 June 2025.
