Green light for Adelaide intersection upgrades to improve traffic flow and safety

The major upgrade to the intersection of Glen Osmond Road and Fullarton Road in Adelaide’s east is now complete, with a vision to create safe road networks across the country.

Major construction work is substantially complete at the upgraded intersection of Glen Osmond Road and Fullarton Road in Adelaide’s east, with all lanes open to traffic. The Australian and South Australian governments, have invested a total of $35 million into this crucial upgrade, with each contributing $17.5 million.

This project encompassed various enhancements, with a primary focus on expanding Fullarton Road to incorporate an additional third dedicated through-traffic lane on both sides through the intersection. The revamp also included the widening of Glen Osmond Road to provide an extra second dedicated right-turn lane onto Fullarton Road for northbound traffic, along with the extension of a longer right-turn lane for southbound traffic making the turn onto Fullarton Road.

One notable change was the removal of the right-turn lane on Fullarton Road into Glen Osmond Road, accompanied by the installation of traffic signals at the intersection of Glen Osmond Road and the realigned Main Avenue.

While the major construction work is now complete, some minor finishing touches, such as landscaping, will be carried out in the coming months.

The project’s full completion is expected by late this year, offering Adelaide residents an improved intersection experience and smoother traffic flow in the east of the city.

“As Adelaide grows and thrives, improving how Aussies move around our lively city is a key focus,” Federal Member for Adelaide Steve Georganas says.

Meanwhile, further south along Fullarton Road, traffic is running smoothly on the completed Cross Road intersection. The Australian and South Australian governments jointly allocated $61 million to this endeavour, with each government contributing $30.5 million.

The Cross Road intersection project boasts widened Cross and Fullarton Roads, dedicated right-turn lanes, three through lanes on both approaches, a dedicated left slip lane, and dual left-turning lanes into Fullarton Road for southbound traffic. Also a shared through and left-turn lane onto Cross Road traveling eastbound was constructed, contributing to enhanced road safety and traffic flow.

The Cross Road bus stops underwent relocation and upgrades as well, with pedestrian crossings within the intersection revamped, and the installation of new and improved traffic signals, pavement, road lighting, line marking, and drainage added further improvements.

Work to reconstruct the Urrbrae Gatehouse at its new location within the Waite Arboretum is currently underway, with the construction expected to conclude in early 2024.

Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government Minister Catherine King underscored the importance of such projects, emphasising the Australian Government’s commitment to creating safer and more efficient road networks across the country.

“While listening to the community, we worked with the South Australian Government to deliver these upgraded intersections and I’m very pleased to see construction complete,” Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King says.

“This work is crucial to busting congestion at these intersections.

“It ensures smoother journeys for commuters, locals, public transport users and business.”

South Australian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Tom Koutsantonis, echoed the sentiment, expressing his pleasure in seeing the upgrades near completion and acknowledging the significant improvements in travel times and safety for all users.

“The widened roadways and new alignment will result in greatly improved connectivity in the east of Adelaide,” Koutsantonis says.

“I’d like to thank road users and locals for their patience during the work. I know it can be frustrating at times but it’s vital we progress with projects like these to ensure the smooth and safe running of our road network.”
