Green Light for Adelaide Oval

Adelaide City Council today said how pleased they are that the Adelaide Oval legislation has passed through Parliament, taking Adelaide to a new level with a world-class stadium.

“Bringing top-level football to the city will bring economic benefits as well as create vibrancy. We look forward to continuing to work with the State Government on this development,” Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said.

“The successful outcome clearly demonstrates that when all levels of government work together, we can achieve positive results for the city and the people of Adelaide.”

The legislation also ensures continued protection of the Park Lands around the Oval.

Pennington and Creswell Gardens and Colonel Light’s Vision will be excluded from the area of Park Lands that is to be licensed to the Minister and remain under the care and control of Council.

Additionally, the area surrounding the Oval must be subject to the Council’s Land Management Plan for the precinct and the Development Assessment Commission will continue as the approval body for any development plans.

“Council recognises and appreciates the support of the Opposition, the Greens and Independents as well as the State Government in achieving not only great benefits for the city, but also protection for the iconic garden and Park Land areas around the Oval,” Stephen said.

The areas of Park Lands now licensed to the Government (Adelaide Oval No. 2 and the Northern Hill) will be restricted by the legislation to an initial term of 20 years, with an option to renew up to a maximum of 80 years. This ensures that if its use changes during future generations, the land will once again revert to the care and control of Council.

Council will remain the landlord of the core area, which includes the Oval, Victor Richardson Drive and the Southern car park, and this area will be leased to the Minister for 80 years.

Victor Richardson Drive will no longer be a road and will be closed to traffic. The Southern car park will also be closed but there will be a new underground car park for 400 cars. The licence for Adelaide Oval No.2 and the Northern Hill will provide car parking on grassed areas, thus ensuring protection of the unique Park Lands setting of Adelaide Oval. Other parking facilities will be provided by Council through investment and existing nearby parking.

“We recognise the need for parking in the local area, as well as within the CBD, and we will also work with the Government to develop a strategy to increase the use of public transport to the Oval and Riverbank precincts,” Stephen said.

Protection has been assured for the Moreton Bay Figs, the Northern Mound and the historic score board in the legislation.
