Grug returns to Adelaide for a special school holiday season with a stellar SA cast

Some of South Australia’s most talented performers will join Grug when he returns to the Adelaide Festival Centre for Grug and the Rainbow.

After sell-out seasons all over the globe, Grug is bouncing out of his burrow and returning to Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre from 4 -16 October for a special school holiday season.

The 2022 season will feature renowned South Australian performers Annabel Matheson (Bluey’s Big Play, Grug), Tim Overton (Grug, Dance Nation) and Elizabeth Hay (Girl from the North CountryHibernation), all of whom have worked extensively with Grug in the past.

“Performing for children is one of my favourite things to do as a performer,” says Hay, “I’m a bit of a Grug- fanatic to be honest. I’m itching to get back onstage with Grug for this very vocal, energetic and lively audience. I can’t wait.”

“Last time Grug and the Rainbow came to Adelaide it sold out in a flash,” says Myers, “Windmill is so lucky to be able to bring Ted Prior’s iconic character to life for a whole new generation.”

Based on Ted Prior’s picture books, Windmill Theatre Company’s smash-hit production Grug and the Rainbow sees our favourite grassy friend wake one morning to find gorgeous colours striped across the sky. He tries to sneak up on them, climbing hills and mountains in an attempt to reach them… but they’re always just out of his grasp. Created especially for audiences aged 2-6 (and Grug fans of all ages), the show sees audiences join Grug on a quest to find all the colours of the rainbow.

“We’re always so blown away by the response to Grug and the Rainbow,” says Artistic Director Rosemary Myers. “We find that a lot of parents have grown up with the books and love sharing these stories with their own children. We can’t wait to bring families together for some fun in the theatre these school holidays.”

Created by director Sam Haren (BeepEscape from Pelligro Island) and designer Jonathon Oxlade (Bluey’s Big Play, Hiccup), Grug and the Rainbow features a stunning set comprising of rolling green hills inspired by Ted Prior’s original illustrations, lighting by Chris Petridis (Creation CreationThe Bleeding Tree) and original composition by DJ Tr!P (GrugMacbeth).

“Any time that I get to spend with Grug is a real privilege and it’s rare to have worked on a show that is so beloved by so many, ”says Haren

Featuring some of the most popular stories from the original picture book series, Grug and the Rainbow will have audiences join Grug on action-packed adventures, including a wild ski-trip, a trip to the beach and at a rocking dance party while he learns the drums.
