Grünthal Brew release two new German-inspired beers for Oktoberfest long-weekend party

The Adelaide Hills microbrewery has released two new tap beers available exclusively at its Oktoberfest event happening across the October long weekend.

It’s that time of year again when we get to dust off our dirndls and attempt to drink steins the size of heads. What started as a celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria back in 1810 has turned into a worldwide celebration of everyone’s favourite, trusty drink – beer.

Held annually, Oktoberfest brings together friends and family and while the main shindig happens in the German town of Munich, there are plenty of celebrations a bit closer to home for those of us who can’t make the trip.

Adelaide Hills destination venue, Grünthal Brew, is joining in on the fun this year with an Oktoberfest-themed event running across all days of the October long weekend. Owners Sheree and Saul Sullivan are tracing back to their Hahndorf roots to bring a little bit of Germany to their new microbrewery which opened earlier this year.

Going full German, everything from the food to the music will be reminiscent of the traditional festival, and yes, dressing up is highly encouraged. Saul and Sheree are using this as the perfect opportunity to drop two new beers.

The first – A Munich-style Dunkel that is lighter than a traditional Dunkel with a mild bitterness. “Our new Dunkel has a delicious bread and biscuit malt aroma and flavour that will definitely have you filling up your stein more than once,” says Saul.

The second – A German-style Bock which is the traditional brew of Oktoberfest. “This one is very, very moreish,” says Saul. “It’s rich and malty with sweet nutty flavours and a medium bitterness.”

Saul made the transition from cheesemaker to brewer when he and Sheree shut up their Udder Delights cheese cellar door in Hahndorf and moved it within Grünthal Brew. Working closely with his head brewer, Kai Cook, Saul ensures nothing but the highest quality from his beers that are all brewed onsite at the Verdun property.
