Guidelines issued for keeping footy Mad Monday COVID safe

A crowd of up to 25,000 people are being urged to stay COVID-safe, at the first-ever Monday night AFL football game to be held at the Adelaide Oval tonight.

A crowd of up to 25,000 people are being urged to stay COVID-safe, at the first-ever Monday night AFL football game to be held at the Adelaide Oval tonight.

Health Minister Stephen Wade said that the organisers have done a great job putting the night together.  A raft of precautionary measures will be in place so that everyone attending can safely watch the Adelaide Crows versus St Kilda game at the ground.

“Public health officials have worked closely with the Stadium Management Authority to ensure the tomorrow night’s game can go ahead safely,” the Minister said.

“Now it’s up to everyone at the ground to be a team player, to play their part.

Consider your match fitness before heading to the Oval and if you have even mild symptoms, don’t go to the game.

“The safety measures in place will only work if everyone follows the guidelines.

”We encourage all fans to be mindful of others when moving in and around the Stadium and to maintain appropriate physical distancing at all times.

“If all play our part, that will give us the best chance to have more footy – to attend and enjoy live footy in South Australia.”

A team of SA Health public health officials, including Chief Public Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier, will be in attendance at the game to review all aspects of COVID safety.

Here’s some tips for footy fans attending the game:

  • make sure you bring a card – you can’t use cash for payments
  • only use the Riverbank Footbridge if you are travelling by train, with people entering the city encouraged to use an alternative route.
  • arrive early
  • limit the size of your bags
  • have your their tickets ready as you arrive to help avoid congestion and make security checks faster and safer
  • maintain at least 1.5m physical distancing between you and other people – twice as much for St Kilda fans
  • stay in your seat, unless you need to get refreshments or use the bathroom

All spectators will be issued a reserved seat with standing areas, including the Hill, not available.

Fans will not be able to move around except to enter and exit the venue, use the bathroom or access the food and beverage outlets closest to their seat. All payments must also be made by card.

Minister Wade said it’s important for people to practice good personal hygiene at all times by washing and sanitizing their hands regularly, and coughing and sneezing into their elbow.

“We know South Aussie footy fans have been eager to attend home games, but if you are unwell, you must take one for the team and stay home and make sure you get a COVID-19 test,” he said.

“We hope to continue to host football games in South Australia into the future so we need everyone to make health and safety their priority.

“This is especially important now, given the higher risk of COVID-19 in South Australia due to the current outbreak in Victoria.”

At the end of the game, all fans are encouraged to respect each other and making the game safe for us all.
