Guten Appetit opened quietly in Hahndorf last week, joining the array of German offerings on the popular strip.

Owners and partners Marie Risley and Jennifer Schmitz had always dreamt of opening their own café and decided now was the perfect time to do it.

“When that space came up, it was perfect for what we wanted,” Marie said.

“Jen is a chef and has been one for 25 years.

“With Jen having a German heritage and me being a massive foodie and wanting to be an interior designer, this gave us the opportunity to pursue both of our dreams together.”

While Hahndorf is known for its massive offerings of German cuisine, Marie said they are hope to bring more authenticity with their café.

“I know that some German food sold in Hahndorf is not traditional – it’s what Australia knows as German,” Marie said.

“German food is actually quiet light, so Jen and I hope to bring more authentic German food into Hahndorf.”

“The food we are making is traditional German food from the Rheinland area.”

Guten Appetit’s menu is made entirely inhouse, from the brunch and lunch dishes right to the sweets and cakes.

They offer fresh juices and smoothies too which are made on the spot using locally-sourced produce from the Adelaide Hills.

The humble café has a strong focus on German offerings, but there is something for everyone too. Customers can look forward to brunch classics, while there is a selection of traditional German dishes and gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options on the menu.

Marie said a star of the menu is the Pfannkuchen which is German pancakes. They come sweet with toasted pecans, caramel sauce and cream, or savoury with speck served with salad.

“We have started with a part menu and are growing it over the next four weeks,” Marie said.

“We are growing our salad menu too – one of the most popular salads is the roast pumpkin as well as the German potato salad called Kartoffelsalat.”

Marie said their biggest seller is their coffee with milk options to suit everyone’s preferences, in line with the inclusive nature of the space.

“We want people to really enjoy the vibe and soak in the interior too,” Marie said.

“The staff are really friendly, the atmosphere is relaxing, and the food is delicious.”

Guten Appetit is located on 1/76 Mount Barker Road.

Guten Appetit is open Wednesday to Sunday 8am-4pm.
