It’s hard enough finding the spare change for groceries these days, let alone facing the frothy reality that a tenner barely cuts it when grabbing a pint at your local watering hole.
One Adelaide Hills pub has got the solution: $5 pints, all day, every day.
Why are they doing this? Well, co-owner and general manager Naman Tyagi, says, “We are just doing it for the community.”
“It’s a great time to just give back to the community and the people who have supported the pub throughout the years.”
There’s a clear reason not every venue is jumping on this generous offering, however: it’s not exactly raking in the profit.
“Honestly, there’s not a lot of margin for us in there, but I think, especially with the budget announced on Tuesday, everyone is doing it a bit tough.”
So in what might be one of the more popular cost-of-living measures following this year’s budget, German Arms has announced a stimulus package of its own: $5 pints of Liquid Gold 3.5% Crisp Lager.
And unlike most budget measures, this one is fairly easy to understand.
“Beer should be fun. You should be able to just get together like the old days and have a pint without paying an arm and a leg for it.”
And yes, you’re reading that correctly. “It’s $5. There will be no Sunday surcharges, or public holiday surcharges. It will be just $5 all day every day.”
But if $5 pints already sound like a throwback, German Arms is going even further, dialling prices back to the 20th century for launch day. From 3pm to 4pm on Friday 15 May, the pub will be pouring $1 pints of Liquid Gold.
Of course, if you’re already heading to German Arms for a pint, there’s every reason to stay for a feed. Alongside its $5 Liquid Gold pours, the Hahndorf pub is also serving up the kind of hearty fare you’d expect from a full-blown German venue, including a 3kg Wagyu shank dubbed ‘Thor’s Hammer’, which Naman says could easily be shared between three or four people.
Leaning into its Hahndorf home, the pub also offers a range of German dishes, including gourmet wursts, kranskies, and pork schnitzel topped with sauerkraut. And if pub classics are more your speed, there are plenty of those on the menu too.
In a year where every dollar counts, German Arms is proving there’s still room in the budget for one very welcome line item: a $5 pint at the pub.
