The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has unveiled its 2024 Season, promising a musical journey that spans timeless classics, contemporary performances, and groundbreaking collaborations. With a legacy of exceptional musicianship and artistic excellence, this season is set to be a memorable one.
Under the fresh leadership of CEO Colin Cornish, the ASO is set to elevate its musical offerings.
“Our 2024 season showcases epic collaborations such as the Rachmaninov Symphonies project and Floods of Fire, great musical works in the Symphony Series, and spectacular events including Harry Potter in Concert. ASO is known for its performing brilliance and diversity of engagement with South Australians, and 2024 promises to be a season in which we reach even more members of our community,” he said.
One of the highlights, Floods of Fire, is a response to climate change and will be showcased during the 2024 Adelaide Festival in March. This ambitious program, in collaboration with over 100 local organizations, will culminate in a grand finale concert at the Festival Theatre, featuring the electronic musical duo, Electric Fields, alongside the ASO.
For classical music enthusiasts, the return of conductor Andrew Litton for Rachmaninov: The Symphonies in June is eagerly anticipated.
Andrew Litton said he was thrilled to be returning to the ASO to conduct these Symphonies.
“After last year’s sold-out series of the piano Concerti, it is the perfect way to round out our celebration of Rachmaninov’s genius,” he said.
The ASO’s Symphony Series remains a staple, with eight concerts spread throughout the year, showcasing the orchestra’s artistry under the baton of renowned conductors like Douglas Boyd, Shi-Yeon Sung, and Litton.
Another opportunity to experience the Orchestra in a new light, will be at the brand new event, ASO at Hart’s Mill. Audiences will hear music inspired by the street art of Wonderwalls in Port Adelaide. This iconic space will come alive with the sounds of jazz-trumpeter Lazaro Numa, talented saxophonist Adam Page, and recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey, all led by conductor Benjamin Northey.
Female composers take centre stage in May with the She Speaks four-part series; Unearth, Spirit, Dynamic & Discover. Co-curated by composers Anne Cawrse and Belinda Gehlert, this series will celebrate blazing contributions of women composers, igniting the stage with diverse musical voices.
Some of the world’s most recognised music underpin special events that are sure to be crowd favourites. Festival Theatre will host The Music of Hans Zimmer in July, where audiences will be taken on a journey through scores of classic films like Gladiator, The Lion King and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Fans will be treated to the sixth instalment of the wildly popular Harry Potter in Concert film series with Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in Concert at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre in August.
One of the world’s most legendary songwriters will be honoured at What the World Needs Now – a Tribute to Burt Bacharach in November to celebrate his musical legacy with his greatest hits performed by the ASO and stellar cast including David Campbell and Caroline O’Connor.
Concertmaster Kate Suthers summed up the season.
“In 2024 there are so many ways to see your ASO. The orchestra will perform more than 119 concerts over 47 programs in venues all around Adelaide and South Australia. We believe music is for everyone, and next year we look forward to welcoming new and familiar faces along the way”, said Kate.
