Friends since school days, Fiona Talbot-Leigh and Annie Slade are now reunited, after almost losing touch for seven years. Their show is named after their current situations, Slade training to be a midwife and Talbot-Leigh working as a civil celebrant for marriages and funerals. Accompanied by that hard working pianist, Chris Martin, they have put together a collection of songs, and plenty of humorous badinage, juxtaposed against some serious and soul-searching revelations.
They dig into their own lives in a no holds barred expose of both their good and bad moments, from the joys of having children, to the failed relationships. There are a good few poignant moments but also masses of hilarity and some great songs in this captivating show. They first state the ‘rules’ for the show before enticing an audience volunteer to join them for the very first number, Eye of the Tiger. From here on it is a rollercoaster ride as they interrupt one another, disagree about their different life choices and generally feign a degree of chaos, confusion and disorganisation in what is actually a well rehearsed evening of great entertainment.
One of the notable points in this performance is the fine harmonisation of their voices and I particularly liked the duet where Talbot-Leigh sang Both Sides Now, alternating with Slade’s lullabies that she wrote for her children. Several other of Slade’s songs featured during the performance along with some well known tunes such as I Go to Rio and For Once in My Life. The show ended, appropriately, with Me and My Shadow and, of course, lots of applause. There is one more performance on Sunday, so hurry along.
