Have your say on Kangaroo Island’s hub of commercial, cultural and tourism activity as the State Government’s draft master plan for the Penneshaw harbour precinct is now open for public comment. Place-making, safety, efficiency and accessibility are all embedded into the potential design to improve the experience for locals and visitors.
The plan will see upgrades to harbour access and amenities with improved safety and a design to the car park and drop off areas to increase visitor numbers. The harbour’s freight waiting capacity could be increased thanks to a new heavy vehicle marshalling area. The proposal also allows space for potential future developments.
The city is looking to receive new way-finding signage, open space upgrades as well as an infinity walking loop concept that will enhance existing facilities and improve intersections and crossing points and in turn attracting more visitors to the region. Potential traffic jams will be curbed by calming kerb build-outs and coloured surface treatments to highlight the potential vehicle and pedestrian conflict points.
State Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Tom Koutsantonis said the Penneshaw harbour precinct is an important gateway to one of South Australia’s most loved tourism destinations, Kangaroo Island.
“It also provides primary access from the island to the rest of South Australia for people, vehicles, and freight,” Minster Koutsantonis.
“With up to 50,000 passengers and 10,000 vehicles using the harbour every month, it’s vital that the precinct is efficient, accessible and welcoming, while also accommodating the diverse range of people who use the area.”
The community is invited to drop in to one of the community information sessions at the Penneshaw Town Hall – held on September 20th between 4pm and 6pm and September 21st between 10am and 12pm – to meet the project team, learn more about the Master Plan, ask questions and provide feedback.
The feedback given will inform future infrastructure priorities, support growth in the Fleurieu Peninsula and on Kangaroo Island, and deliver improved essential transport services – in line with the Kangaroo Island Ports Upgrade project and Sealink ferry upgrade works.
Minster Koutsantonis encourages the community to look at the plan and provide feedback to ensure that it reflects what is most important to them.
“We value community and stakeholder feedback as part of our master plan development process,” he said.
The aim is to create an integrated harbour precinct with a safer shared road network between the town centre and the ferry terminal – aligning with the draft Cape Jervis Harbour Precinct Master Plan released in March 2024.
