But for local cabaret performer Shelley Dunstone, it was the inspiration for a new cabaret show. “Unbreak My Heart” is a journey into the “scary, weird, wonderful” world of heart surgery. In July of last year, Shelley was surprised to discover that she had a leaking heart valve and urgently needed a life-saving operation. She captured the experience in a blog, and decided that the story was perfect material for a cabaret.

“This show explores universal themes that will resonate with most people. Everyone, at some stage in their life, has to face something dangerous or scary”, she said.

Shelley developed her show during the Cabaret Summer School, held in Adelaide in January. The show features an eclectic mix of music, including songs by Sinatra, Roxette, the Bee Gees and Jobim. Shelley will be accompanied on piano by musical director Emma Knights.

“Unbreak My Heart” is in the Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival. Performances are on 11, 14 and 15 June, 6 pm at La Boheme. Tickets ($18-$25) are available here.
