An Adelaide couple has celebrated in style, with Heidelberg bakery creating a giant cake for their wedding ceremony.
The raspberry sponge cake is the biggest the bakery has ever made, with 24 punnets of raspberries, 12 kilos of sponge and 11.5 kilos of delectable white chocolate ganache. The hunk of a cake is set to feed around 180 people with its total weight of 30 kilos.
“It was about 76cm in length… it was heavy!” says chef and bakery owner James Schmidt.
Heidelberg Cakes had to put on their chef hats after the wedding couple showed James a reference picture of a large cake.
“I scratched my head and thought.. How do we do that?” James said.
The bakery took measures into their own hands creating baking guides and designs for the cake, making sure the love bugs were fully satisfied.
“It just fit through the door and back gate of the venue, luckily everything went to plan,” James said.
Heidelberg cakes have been providing Australians with celebration cakes since 1991- the family owned and run business use their decades of experience to create cakes that are a little fancier than your average birthday cake.
“My parents started making cakes in 1965, my brother and I did an apprenticeship with them in Kent town.. my brother started the [Heidelberg] bakery and my wife and I have since bought it,” James said.
“With commercial cake suppliers the market was dying out quickly, so we diversified into special occasion and design cakes.”

“From footballs to handbags- so many different types of cakes,” James said.
“For 30 years, we’ve kept the cake making in the family.. we’ve made birthday cakes for children who are now asking for their engagement cakes and will be asking for their children’s birthday cake.”
