Popular SA cake-making business Heidelberg Cakes has been saved from liquidation by a “major local South Australian business,” according to a recent update from the bakery.
In a post to Facebook, Heidelberg Cakes shared the good news: “MIRACLES HAPPEN! We have just been informed that a major local South Australian business has rescued Heidelberg Cakes! Stay tuned as there is a lot of work to do and customers to contact!”
The post has quickly gone viral, with comments flooding in from customers and supporters expressing their relief, gratitude, and excitement over the bakery’s survival. While the identity of the business that has stepped in to save Heidelberg Cakes remains unconfirmed, the announcement has been met with widespread praise.
The news of Heidelberg Cakes’ near-liquidation first broke on Wednesday, when the bakery shared a now-deleted post revealing that it was preparing to close its doors. The announcement left many customers in the dark, with several waiting for wedding and birthday cakes. Plus, many staff members were left uncertain about their jobs.
Several local cake makers, including Millswood’s Sugar and Spice Cakes, rallied in solidarity with Heidelberg Cakes. In a post to Instagram, Sugar and Spice Cakes said: “This is sadly a reflection of the current struggle we all face.
“Daily we are asked to discount our prices and asked why we charge so much for something that is just a simple cake (our least favourite word) We are all recovering from Covid….remember when you couldn’t have weddings & parties & we couldn’t have anymore than 10 at our house.”
Based in Stepney, Heidelberg Cakes have been providing South Aussies with celebration cakes since 1991.
