Throughout this month, Barossa Valley Chocolate Company will be donating $1 from every sale of their Benni the Koala (as featured) to the Adelaide Koala Rescue. After September, they will continue to support the cause by donating 50c from each of their Benni’s chocolates.
Barossa Valley Chocolate Company co-founder and Marketing Director, Sandy Day, says, “I have loved koalas my whole life, so much so that we created our mascot Benni to look exactly like a koala I see all the time when I walk around the Barossa. We are thrilled we can do something to create awareness and help these gorgeous, Australian animals before they are an endangered species.”
Adelaide Koala Rescue is a not-for-profit organisation and charity running a 24-hour free koala rescue and rehabilitation service covering the north-east, eastern inner city and Adelaide Hills ranges.
The team consists of people who are highly trained in koala and other wildlife rescue, including experienced veterinarians, animal science professionals, research scientists and students, who each volunteer their time and skills to help koalas in need.
Adelaide Koala Rescue founder, Jane Brister, says how creating awareness, educating and advocating for koalas are the first steps in ensuring the safety of our native species.
“Our team are here to help animals who have experienced road trauma, or need special care, but we also want people to know who to call if they see a koala in need, know that there are people like us who will help them,” Brister explains.
The team at Barossa Valley Chocolate Company will also be helping the not-for-profit organisation by buying the team new vests they can wear when going to a rescue, offering protection from scared and reactive koalas.
