With masks now being part of the new normal, it can be difficult tweaking your makeup routine to adapt.

If you are finding that your makeup is disappearing underneath your mask, or that your base is sliding around, check out these 6 tips for how to make your makeup last underneath a mask.

Don’t underestimate the power of a primer

While many people skip the primer step in their makeup routine there are many on the market which aid in the longevity of your makeup. As opposed to using something that is simply marketed as a ‘mattifying’ or ‘hydrating’, try and find a primer that is gripping and almost sticky in texture. This will literally grip the foundation to your skin and make it last all day, masking wearing and all.

Find a foundation that is transfer resistant

The goal with choosing the right foundation to wear under a mask is to opt for one that is transfer resistant. These often have a matter, powdery finish, as something that is more hydrating and has some glow tend to stay wet on the skin, meaning they will be easily removed by the mask.

If you are simply not a fan of these kinds of bases, a handy tip is to wear a mattifying base on the areas of your face that the mask covers and then wear you are your favourite hydrating foundation, tinted moisturiser or BB cream on the rest of your face.

Lock in your base with powder and setting spray

If you are extra worried about your foundation rubbing off from mask wearing, consider adding a powder and setting spray into your makeup routine.

Powder is a must-have more many reasons: it sets your makeup in place, mattifies it, and is great for touch ups. It is also handy if you do not want to use a mattifying foundation, as you can easily just add powder to the areas you specifically want to set.

A setting spray is also a great step. It asks almost like a hairspray for your face, while taking away the powder/dry look that mattifying products can sometimes give, particularly on dry skin.

Layer up creams and powders for extra wear-time

As masks sit on your cheeks, it is often common for not just your foundation to rub off, but also your blush, bronzer and highlight.

If you are serious about prolonging the wear of your makeup, layering creams or liquids underneath your powder products is super effective. It acts as another layer of colour, and as mentioned earlier, setting your liquids with a powder really locks in the products.

Now is the time to play up your eyes

As the bottom half of our faces are now hidden to the public, now is a great opportunity to enhance your eyes through the power of makeup.

Whether it’s by practicing your smokey eye technique, wearing those colours you don’t typically wear or giving winged eyeliner a go, there are so many ways to play up your eyes. If you do not have a lot of time to get ready, finding a good one-and-done eyeshadow to wear all across the lid is a quick and easy way to show off your eyes.

There are so many amazing options out there for eyeshadow, so head to your local Mecca, Sephora or chemist to see what is on the market.

Longwear lipstick is your new best friend

While glosses and balms may be comfortable, if you have worn them underneath a mask then you would know how they can either just disappear or end up with a smudge of colour across your face.

Long-wear formulas, such as liquid lipsticks or lip stains, are perfect for wearing under your mask. The colour does not transfer and it stays looking bold for hours.
