With its heavenly crisp, buttery exterior, and soft, flaky layers, it’s no wonder Adelaide’s Finest Supermarkets’ croissant rests atop the podium for another year running. This year, Adelaide’s Finest Pasadena and Frewville completely dominated the baking category, securing first place across five categories. The patisserie scored gold for its Ciabatta, Light Rye Sourdough, Sourdough, Sourdough Baguette, and of course, its croissant. The croissant was once again named Australia’s Best Croissant, and this year reached Champion Product of the Show status.
But it was a new, innovative creation that stole the show. It’s a crispy danish that takes days to create, but the result is absolutely spectacular. The Strawberry, Rhubarb and Lemon Cream Bow Tie Danish starts with a crunch before evolving into a sweet, tangy bite that’s unlike anything you’ve tried before. Once you know how meticulous the baking process is, everything makes sense.
Head Pâtissier Tharindu and his team put multiple days into each of these delicate pastries. The process begins with fresh produce from Adelaide’s Finest Pasadena, simmered into a silky coulis. The lemon cream is made from a meringue base enriched with butter, cream cheese, candied lemon, and fresh zest. Two doughs, one tinted red, are proved overnight before being laminated with premium French butter to create the light, crisp layers of classic Viennoiserie. After 27 layers are formed through folding and sheeting, the dough is cut, layered, chilled, and shaped into bow ties with meticulous precision. Each Danish is baked until golden and filled with fruit and cream.
All award-winning products are available from Adelaide’s Finest Supermarkets Frewville and Pasadena, and online. Make sure you get in early each day, because a lot of items tend to sell out rather quickly (especially the croissants). The Strawberry, Rhubarb and Lemon Cream Bow Tie Danish is available exclusively on weekends, while all other prize-winners are on offer daily.
