Storytellers Distillery is the newest distillery on the block and has just released its first gin.
Upon returning to Adelaide earlier this year, after four years of bartending in Sydney, owner Lachlan Gunner said the opportunity presented itself to expand into distilling. “I saw my future in flavour, and the best place to have people experience what you do is through bottles”.
You can’t visit yet – a cellar door is set to open early next year – but people wanting to get an early taste of Gunner’s locally brewed, small batch gin, can find it on their website.
Volume One is the first gin Gunner has made. It’s an Australian dry gin and was launched at central city bar Hains and Co on December 1.
Combining Australian botanicals, such as the tableland strawberry gum, with more traditional ones like juniper, coriander seeds, and orris root, Volume One is available for purchase in limited supply.
With each new gin, the distillery provides a story – “We’re telling the story of the ingredients … where we source those ingredients, the source of our suppliers,” says Gunner.
‘My main feature and focus were on cocktails. I promised myself to enter as many cocktail competitions as I could’. In 2019 Gunner was among the top 20 Australian participants of Diageo World Class, an internationally renowned cocktail competition.
Storytellers will rely on new flavours with each release rather than relying on an unchanging back catalogue.
‘Most people, when they buy a bottle of spirits, it takes them a few weeks to go through [so] we always want to make sure there’ll be something new for them when they go back.’
By early 2021, Gunner aims to have the Storytellers cellar door up and running in Brompton, an exciting addition to the neighbourhood.
Storyteller’s first gin Volume 1 is available for purchase in limited quantity on their website.
