Hills are alive, with ‘Discover, Play, Bikeway!’ this weekend

The Amy Gillett Bikeway will for the first time come alive with a free family event “Discover, Play, Bikeway!” this Sunday, 21 February, as part of Festival of the Hills – a free weekend of events by Adelaide Hills Council.

The Amy Gillett Bikeway will for the first time come alive with a free family event “Discover, Play, Bikeway!” this Sunday, 21 February, as part of Festival of the Hills – a free weekend of events by Adelaide Hills Council.

Part of the Adelaide Fringe, “Discover, Play, Bikeway!” follows the fully booked out Opening Night Party in Stirling on Friday evening and Strum & Stroll on Saturday in Lobethal.

The free Sunday event will see an array of pop-up food, music, art, and performances come together to entertain children and families along the 15-kilometre bikeway.

Adelaide Hills Council Mayor Jan-Claire Wisdom says the festival is an opportunity for the Hills community and those far and wide to come together and enjoy a relaxed and entertaining day out after what has been a difficult year for many with the Cudlee Creek and Cherry Gardens fires and the ongoing impact of COVID-19.

“Many locals already know about this fantastic recreation trail, but this event is the perfect introduction for newcomers looking for a family day out cycling or walking through the gently rolling fields and bushland of the Adelaide Hills,” Mayor Wisdom said.

“We’ll have art installations and performers on show, and Hills businesses have really embraced the opportunity to participate with their own displays, offers, and market stalls,” she said.

Visitors can plan their day around one or more of four main hubs along the Bikeway. These include Mount Torrens Oval where Tennis SA will host the ‘Rally as One’ Bushfire Recovery event with a Kids Colour Run, Hot Shot tennis coaching, live music, stalls and raffles supporting the CFS and Scouts SA.

At Charleston Park, visitors can enjoy dance and theatre, live music and market stalls, while at Woody Trails BMX in Woodside, there will market stalls, food and drink and lots of activity on the BMX track. You can hire a bike from Bike About at Gillman Reserve in Oakbank to start your journey and enjoy a bite to eat and some entertainment before setting off.

Barristers Block have live music on the lawn and $5 tasting while you can also enjoy special offers from Melba’s Chocolates, Murdoch Hill and Lobethal Road Winery.

“Whether you’re on wheels or foot, we’re excited for visitors to explore and discover new parts of the district and show that the Hills are open and ready to welcome visitors with open arms,” Mayor Wisdom said.

Joining in on the festivities will be Amy Gillett’s parents, Mary and Dennis, in support and recognition of the Amy Gillett Foundation, established in their late daughter’s name.
