The Hills’ oldest country pub is about to become a creative hideaway, with a new artist residency opening up at Macclesfield’s historic Three Brothers Arms Hotel circa 1841.
From August this year until January 2026, artists from around Australia are invited to apply for Make Believe Dream Create in Macclesfield – a new program giving creatives the chance to live and work in a cosy on-site studio at the pub.
The best part? The studio is rent-free, so artists can focus on their work without worrying about the cost of living.

The program is part of Mount Barker District Council’s push to grow the region’s creative scene, and Arts Officer Sally Hardy says it’s all about giving artists the space and freedom to explore new ideas.
“Being a professional artist is not for the faint-hearted. You’re juggling your craft with the realities of running a business,” she said.
“By removing the cost of a studio, we’re giving artists a rare chance to fully immerse themselves in their work.”
It’s not every day you get to stay in a spot like this either. The Three Brothers Arms originally called the Goat’s Head Inn, has seen plenty of stories over the years. With its stone walls, open fires, shingled roof and old-world charm, it’s the kind of place that naturally sparks inspiration.

The residency is open to emerging, mid-career and established artists across any artform. You could be a painter, a writer, a sculptor, or someone working on something totally unique. Artists from outside the area are welcome to apply, as long as their project connects with the Mount Barker district in some way.
Residencies are available for two, four or six weeks, and artists will need to spend at least three days a week working from the studio. At the end of their stay, they’ll also offer the local community a chance to engage with the work they’ve created.
“This program isn’t just about giving artists a studio,” Sally said.
“It’s about bringing creativity into the heart of the community and encouraging connection through the arts.”
Applications close at midnight on Sunday 20 July, so if you’re an artist looking for a bit of space, quiet, and country charm to help fuel your next big idea, this could be just the thing.
