History researches and writers encouraged to explore SA’s past with $2000 Fellowship open for nominations

The History Council of South Australia is offering a $2000 fellowship to support researchers delving into the state’s rich history.

The History Council of South Australia (HCSA) is inviting applications for its annual fellowship, set to reward researchers and writers in the field of history with a $2,000 stipend. The initiative aims to foster an appreciation and deeper understanding of South Australia’s rich history. This fellowship is available for both professional and amateur historians who are looking to undertake a significant writing project in the field of South Australian history.

The stipend is designed to assist with the research costs associated with an extensive range of activities such as travel, purchasing necessary materials, and accessing archives. It offers a unique opportunity for historians to delve deeper into their subject matter with the peace of mind that some of their financial barriers are mitigated.

Eligibility for the fellowship is open to all individuals who have an ongoing or upcoming project related to the history of South Australia. The HCSA encourages applications from a diverse range of participants, including those from underrepresented groups in the field of history and academia.

HCSA president Professor Matthew Fitzpatrick says “We’re keen to encourage the discovery, analysis and exploration of South Australia’s history – to increase public knowledge and spark conversations about our rich past.”

“In recent years our fellowship winners and highly commended nominees have researched everything from settler health in colonial South Australia, to the identification of individuals in unmarked graves. No topic is too niche if you’re passionate and keen to share your findings with the wider community.”

In addition to the $2000 prize, the State Library of South Australia provides valuable desk space for the fellowship winner to conduct their research, as well as the use of a computer and up to 10 hours of research support.

Fellowship holders will be expected to make use of the resources and support of the State Library of South Australia and, where appropriate, other South Australian cultural institutions and repositories in pursuing a dedicated program of historical research. Access to relevant resources and support will be facilitated by the HCSA in collaboration with the relevant institution(s) where the research activity is to be carried out.

The duration of the research work undertaken will be determined by the Fellowship holder in consultation with the HCSA and relevant institutions.

It is a requirement of the Fellowship that the holder will give a presentation on the research project and its findings at a time and in a format mutually agreed with the HCSA.

Interested individuals are encouraged to submit their applications by the upcoming deadline of November 15, 2024. The recipient of the fellowship will be announced in December 2025, following a thorough review and selection process by a panel comprising members of the HCSA’s executive committee and noted historians.
